Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from a Northwestern Iranian cognate of Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫤𐫗𐫉- (tnz- /tanz-/, to strain, press), from Proto-Iranian *tanč- (to twist (together), become narrow, dense, constrict), from Proto-Indo-European *tenk- (to compact). Akin to Ossetian тындзын (tynʒyn), Old Armenian տանջեմ (tanǰem), Old Georgian ტანჯვა (ṭanǯva), as well as Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc, to contract, coagulate); see the Sanskrit for more cognates.[1]
