He is o strynd frae Bulgarian refugees frae soothren Macedon that resattlit frae the day's toun o Petrousa in the municipality o Prosotsani in Drama regional unit, Greek Macedon, in 1913. The Plevneliev faimily name refers tae the Bulgarian name o the toun, Plevnya (Плевня, "barn").[3]

Plevneliev studied at Blagoevgrad Mathematical an Naitural Sciences Heich Schuil, frae that he graduatit in 1982. In 1989 he graduatit frae the Heicher Mechanical-Electrotechnical Institute, Sofia, an in the same year becam a fellae at the Institute for Microprocessin Technology, Pravets. He wis annoonced as GERB's candidate for Preses o Bulgarie on 4 September 2011.[5] He subsequently wan the presidential election in a seicont roond held on 30 October 2011, wi a majority o 52,58% o the vote.[6] He defeatit Ivaylo Kalfin frae the Bulgarie Socialist Pairty in the seicont roond. He teuk the presidential oath on 19 Januar 2012 an offeecially teuk ower frae his predecessor Georgi Parvanov on 22 Januar 2012. Amang his priorities are admeenistrative reforms, energy efficiency an energy unthirldom an remuivin o ambassadors o Bulgarie in furren kintras that hae serrt as secret agents durin the Communist regime.

As a result o the 2013 Bulgarie protests agin monopoly an heich electricity prices, the conservative govrenment o Prime Meenister Boyko Borisov tendered its demission on 20 Februar 2013. Preses Plevneliev, actin in accordance wi the constitution, offert a mandate tae form a new govrenment athin the term o the current Parliament tae GERB, BSP an DPS but efter aw o them declined, Plevneliev appyntit a caretaker govrenment on 13 Mairch 2013, wi Marin Raykov, the Bulgarie ambassador in Paris as Prime Meenister an Meenister o Furren Affairs.
