Three-months of Wikimedian in Residence at the Qemal Baholli Public Library in Albania

Wikimedian in Residence in Elbasan, Albania

Over 3 months Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group worked closely with the Wikimedian in Residence placed at the Qemal Baholli Public Library in Elbasan, Albania, From August to October 2023, this project had an impact in contributing to Wikimedia platforms, increasing community engagement, and empowering people within the library, including the library readers and workers.

When we first started developing this project, our User Group and the Wikimedian in Residence focused on enhancing the representation of culture, museum, history, and knowledge about Elbasan. The Wikimedian in Residence created a variety of new articles, that included diverse subjects, improved the library’s article on Wikipedia, enriched the online knowledge about important books produced by the library’s directors through years within the institution.

Multimedia enrichment on Commons One of the central goals during this project was to upload pictures from the public library to represent the books that are written by librarians and focus on books that are found specifically in it. Our Wikimedian in Residence worked on adding photographs on Commons, giving exactly the insights into Elbasan area culture and heritage. The images help the community understand the values and history of this area.

Enriching Wikidata

The project extended its reach on Wikidata as well, adding items and pictures that connect to articles on Wikipedia.

Having a conversation with our Wikimedian in Residence, she came to the conclusion that she feels proud of the impact she made in this 3-month journey being a mediator between the Public Library and Wikimedia platforms. She says that this project has increased the representation of Elbasan knowledge online but has also strengthened the ties within the community. The Wikimedian in Residence feels very committed to becoming a space of learning and sharing on Wikipedia and other projects.

New partners in Rio and GLAM WikiCon

In November, we signed three new GLAM partnerships in Rio de Janeiro city:

Instituto Pretos Novos is an institute located in the Centro neighborhood, central region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was founded in 1995, at the former home of the Guimarães dos Anjos family, who accidentally discovered, in 1996, the Cemitério dos Pretos Novos (Young Black People's Cemetery), while carrying out renovations at their residence. The institute's mission is to research and preserve African and Afro-Brazilian material and immaterial heritage, especially that found in its historical and archaeological site.

Laboratório de Conservação de Documentos is a lab that aims to preserve and build a digital archive for paper documents relating to the architecture and landscape of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) Seropédica Campus. The main objective of the project is to create and coordinate actions that contribute to expanding free access to documents about the history and memory of the university.

Casa Museu Eva Klabin is a museum located in the Lagoa neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was established in 1990 and officially opened to the public in 1995. The museum is the former home of Eva Klabin, a collector who bequeathed to the city of Rio de Janeiro a collection of almost 50 centuries of works of art, furniture and decorative ornaments, from Ancient Egypt to Impressionism.

Large upload from CMU

This November, we made another important donation to the UNICAMP Memory Center collection. This is the "History of Campinas from the Aristides Pedro da Silva collection".

Consisting of 1,828 photographs (including flexible and glass negatives), dating from 1870 to 1995, this is possibly the most important photographic collection on the city of Campinas, given the breadth of the chronology, the thematic scope and the quality of the records.

This set is perfect for those who like old photos and wants to compare the changes over the time. Do you recognize the buildings and people on the photos?

As part of the project granted by the Municipality of Campinas, CMU also organized the "4th Seminar on Digital Cultural Collections of CMU" to think about the treatment and availability of photographic collections on the digital environment with the panelists:

Round-table "Challenges of managing and extroverting photographic collections" The afternoon session will focus on the case of the , from its informational importance for research to its treatment and dissemination.

On the occasion of the event, CMU also launched an exhibition called "Campinas through the lens of V8".

Railways media from APESP

134 new media from the Public Archives of the State of São Paulo, including pictures of the inauguration of some railroads and of the interior of some train stations, and also of the Port of Santos. Int his batch, we also uploaded some maps of the old Brazilian Railway Network.

New batch from Casa de Oswaldo Cruz / Fiocruz

Casa de Oswaldo Cruz (COC) is a center for research, teaching, documentation, and communication located in Rio de Janeiro. Its main issue is the collections of Oswaldo Cruz, a Brazilian physician and scientist who was a pioneer bacteriologist, epidemiologist and public health officer. He headed sanitation and vaccination campaigns against yellow fever, bubonic plague and smallpox. This new upload brings personal working objects of Oswaldo Cruz to Wiki.

GLAM WikiCon

Pre-Conference

On November 9th, Wikimedians from Uruguay, Wiki Movimento Brasil and Casa de Oswaldo Cruz organized a special panel "Wiki Cultura: a conversation about cultural diffusion and open access to Latin American collections". Evelin Heidel (Wikimedians from Uruguay) were the host of this GLAM-talk, where LATAM GLAM institutions brought some pain-points and solutions for them.

Brasil during the Conference

  • Musica Brasilis - making available Brazilian classical music scores with Rosana Lanzelotte (Instituto Musica Brasilis)

Brazilian music scores are difficult to find and access. Most of them have never been edited or are out of print. Many music editors have stopped printing sheet music. Join this session to explore how Musica Brasilis is joining forces with the National Library and UNESCO for the project Digital Collection of Brazilian Music Scores to preserve this important heritage.

For 30 years, we have received life stories in different media formats. Even in the 1990s, we published stories received via email from collaborators. Today, our website offers a platform that allows the submission of text and multimedia narratives. We have also carried out over 300 oral memory collection projects, in connection with local communities. In total we have interviewed over 18.000 people from all over the country. However, our current platform only provided us with limited intel about our own archive, due development limitations. This has significantly improved once we started using the Query Wikidata, which allows us to have a deeper understanding of our archive, as well being able to create graphs with this information, as int can be seen in this article.

The Capacity Exchange is an initiative developing a platform for peer-to-peer connection and capacity building within the Wikimedia Movement. The session aims to discuss peer learning and sharing as a strategy for community-based capacity building around GLAM initiatives. Such a perspective focuses on the decentralized exchange of knowledge-skills-services, rather than centralized training and knowledge transference, as a methodology for the Global Approach for Local Skill Development.

It presents the GLAM Wiki USP Libraries, a Brazilian academic libraries project and the different axes of action in this initiative created in 2020: editing articles about researchers on Wikipedia , cataloguing scientific articles on Wikidata, creating metadata to link libraries repositories and catalogues to Wikidata, training student in media and information literacy activities using Wikipedia Project page. Participants will know initiatives developed by academic libraries with Wikimedia projects on the axes: information organization and education. We hope to discuss the potential of library activities with Wikimedia projects and help participants to identify possible activities to carry on in their contexts.

In this communication we will address the potential of the GLAM initiative to promote the appreciation of Community archives and Social Movements. Through the GLAM initiative, it is possible to disseminate collections and generate greater social participation in the eligibility of what may constitute documentary heritage, encouraging preservation actions and promoting the dissemination of knowledge. GLAM initiatives give communities and social movements the opportunity to document their history and disseminate their collections. It is a tool that allows different subjects to elaborate and make public their own perspectives of organizational memory. GLAM can be a great ally in raising awareness of the social importance of archives and for democratizing the participation of people that ensures diversity of race, gender and regionality in the production of knowledge, in the elaboration and selection of what constitutes heritage.

Releasing media content from GLAM on Commons has been really successful and important over many years. However, it's important it doesn't exist there in a vacuum, but instead gets integrated into the rest of the Wikimedia projects so that it is visible and used widely. We highlight the use of Wikidata as an excellent strategy to do this. In particular, the way that content is then automatically reused and visible across many projects, e.g., various language Wikipedia infoboxes and lists (using Listeria), as well as Commons category infoboxes. The same applies also to metadata added directly to Wikidata, which can be used e.g., in references (using Cite Q), dramatically increasing its visibility. We will cover other tools that can be used to manipulate and display media using Wikidata and its query service - both describing them and providing a how-to guide for how to implement them for your projects.

The world loses irreplaceable pieces of knowledge all the time due to wars, fires, natural disasters, and other crises, especially in museums, libraries, and archives, but also external objects such as monuments. As the world's largest and most available source of knowledge, the Wikimedia movement and its projects have not only the ability but also the duty, to share those objects and safeguard them. In this panel, we intend to show how we can accomplish that together, why it is important, what are the accessibility challenges and how we can advocate to overcome them. in order to safeguard those objects, the country where those objects are situated should have Copyright Laws that allow not only allows proper digitization and documentation, but also policies that allow the sharing of reproductions, such as Freedom of Panorama, Open Licenses guidelines, and other Copyright considerations, which are all accomplished by Copyright Reforms.

This panel will contribute to discussions about and connect GLAM professionals to international efforts on the representation of feminism, art and visual culture on Wikimedia projects highlighting its potential societal impact on media literacy. The audience will learn from the unique perspectives of Art+Feminism’s Regional Leaders. In detail, this session will explore how museums and cultural organizations can broaden their efforts toward tangible actions to address access and knowledge equity through media literacy and inclusive learning programs. Providing foreground to this session, a case study about how the Caribbean Cultural Institute at Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Art+Feminism — “a campaign improving coverage of cis and transgender women, non-binary folks, feminism, and the arts on Wikipedia” — were paired in the development of media literacy programs will launch the conversation into how museums can have an impact on younger generations and openly share museum scholarship online.

Presents the Every Book its reader campaign and its results. The campaign was organized in 2023 by librarians from different countries to promote the improvement of content about books in Wikimedia projects.

Participants will learn how the complexity of the situation of Brazilian memory institutions led us to develop a tool that allows volunteers to help them set up a plan for their effective presence on Wikimedia platforms. We will address issues such as: the need to serve large and small institutions; setting expectations based on the institution’s reality; identifying potentials and challenges for establishing a partnership; collaboration between professionals and volunteers; and the importance of putting together a action plan to build the institution’s loyalty in the Wikimedia Movement.

During the event, the Brazilian GLAM community met and talked about projects.


WCNA 2023: an key event for North American users

The 2023 WikiConference North America happened earlier this month (November 9-12), in Toronto, Canada. During four days, over 250 participants gathered at the Toronto Reference Library.

A pre-conference Culture Crawl was organized on Thursday, November 9. Edit-a-thons and visits were organized at the Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, the Bata Shoe Museum, and the Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library. Overall, 124 references were added, and 65 articles edited, and some pictures were also added to Commons.

The participants were also able to join a lunch walking tour of the Kensington Market. In the evening, an opening reception was held at a board game bar, allowing the participants to mingle and get to know each other while playing games. Each conference day opened with a keynote:

  • on Friday, Selena Deckelmann (Chief Product and Technology Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation),
  • on Saturday, Sue Gardner (former Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation),
  • on Sunday, Ha-Loan Phan (Wikimedia Canada Chair) and Pierre Choffet (consultant for Wikimedia Canada).

Over the span of the conference, over 70 sessions were organized, on a wide range of topics such as Wikimedia governance, GLAM, community updates, or education. Quite a few were presented in a lecture format, but some people also organized edit-a-thons and workshops. Most presentations can be found on Commons. Optional evening sessions were also organized on Friday and Saturday, to brainstorm about global and hub strategies.

Since the conference was happening in Canada, Wikimedia Canada organized a Canadian users lunch Sunday. It was a great occasion for users and Wikimedia Canada staff to meet and exchange ideas about the Wikimedia movement in the country. Quite a few people from the Greater Toronto Area were present, giving some new energy to the Toronto WikiClub (the club will meet on January 14th, for the 2024 Wikipedia Day).

These three days were filled with discussions, ideas, and human connections. The host city for the 2024 conference has not yet been determined, but the conference will certainly continue to be a key event for users in North America.

Methodologies for cultural heritage activities in Wikimedia affiliates: Do-Evaluate-Redo.

This talk focused on presenting an analysis of the results from the Open Culture and Heritage Seminar. The evaluation model of this Seminar was considered as a way to blend qualitative and quantitative analysis to rethink, together with individuals from the institutions, new methodologies aimed at addressing institutional needs. A more detailed description of the space can be consulted here.

Co-Creating an AI Responsive GLAM-Wiki Curriculum

This space was built for reflection on the implementation, fears, and possibilities of Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools in cultural institutions. By forming working groups, the session focused on proposing educational activities that facilitate discussion and the responsible implementation of these tools. Encuentro de Bibliotecas de Bogotá: Desdibujar los límites

Wikimedia Colombia took part in Encuentro de Bibliotecas de Bogotá: Desdibujar los límites. Las Bibliotecas como ecosistemas diversos(Bogotá Libraries Meeting: Blurring the Boundaries, Libraries as diverse ecosystems). In this event, a workshop was conducted with the main objective of introducing tools and potential connections that can emerge between them. Additionally, critical dialogues on open knowledge were proposed. The outcome of this workshop was a foldable fanzine containing the ideas for practical excercices design by the participants. This workshop took place on November 23, 2023.

Cocreando un currículo responsable sobre Inteligencia Artificial para instituciones culturales

Este espacio se construyó dedicado a la reflexión sobre la implementación, temores y posibilidades de las Herramientas de Inteligencia Artificial Generativa en las instituciones culturales. A través de la conformación de grupos de trabajo se dedicó la sesión a la propuesta sobre actividades educativas que permitan el debate y la implementación responsable de estas herramientas. Encuentro de Bibliotecas de Bogotá: Desdibujar los límites

Wikimedia Colombia participó en el Encuentro de Bibliotecas de Bogotá: Desdibujar los límites, las Bibliotecas como espacios para la diversidad. En este, se desarrolló un taller que tuvo como objetivo principal dar a conocer las herramientas y las posibles articulaciones que pueden surgir entre estas. Además, se propusieron diálogos críticos sobre el conocimiento abierto. El resultado de este taller fué un fanzine plegable con las ideas de las personas participantes. Este taller tuvo lugar el 23 de noviembre de 2023.

Edit-a-thon Le retour de la momie

On Saturday 25 November, Toulouse museums, Georges-Labit and Saint-Raymond, have joined forces to organise an edit-a-thon dedicated to the municipal Egyptian collections. This event marked a new stage in the history of Toulouse's museums: the transfer to the Musée Saint-Raymond of the Egyptian collections of the Musée Georges Labit, where they had been kept since 1949. This represents a return, as the collections had already been part of the Musée saint-Raymond between 1924 and 1949. To mark the occasion, 156 artworks are temporarily displayed as part of the museum's permanent exhibition.

The workshop participants were able to visit the exhibition rooms and then, using the documentation prepared by the Musée Georges-Labit they were encouraged to publish images and resources on the Wikiplatforms (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wiktionary).


Record edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in Italy

Thanks to the participants in the competition and the volunteers of the collaborative projects, the 2023 edition was a record-breaking one: over 52,000 photos were uploaded for this edition, with 946 participants, the highest numbers worldwide. As every year, a pre-jury of volunteers and a jury of experts selected the best shots, 5 of which were selected in the religious buildings classification, another 5 in the Italian monuments classification.

In 2023, more than 60,000 churches were photographed in Italy for the first time. Some of the best known and best loved by Italians and others are in the five winners. First place goes to Florence - Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, a photo that capturing the historic building with Brunelleschi's dome at sunset, followed by an interior view of the Baroque dome of the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. Third place goes to Natura e Architettura, a shot in which the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Calascio, Abruzzo, is framed by the mountain panorama. Right at the back is the splendid view of the cloister of Monreale Cathedral, the masterpiece of Byzantine architecture in Palermo. Closing the category award-winners is the Basilica of San Francesco di Assisi during the blue hour, with a photo by Monica Rondini that plays on perspective.

Traditional contest

The first classified photo depicts the panorama of the town of Premana, a comunein the Province of Lecco in the Italian region Lombardy. Second place goes to The Orange Blue Moon which offers a glimpse of the skyline of Giovinazzo, a comune and former bishopric within the Metropolitan City of Bari in the southeastern Italy, followed by the photo of the Aragonese Tower of Guaceto di Carovigno, in the province of Brindisi. The pastel colours of Pavia's Covered Bridge captured by user Domeian, earn fourth place, while the Temple of Athena, Paestum takes fifth place with Diego Delso's photograph.

Special mention

Special mention to the shot Pino Loricato all'alba, which depicts a monumental tree in the Pollino National Park and wins the FIAF special prize.


Share your Data course, history month, REBOOT! and Dutch Public Domain Day event

Course series 'Share your data' for employees of WWII museums and remembrance centers completed

In September and October, Wikimedia Netherlands, commissioned by the Network War Sources, organized a course titled 'Share Your Data' for employees of remembrance centers and war museums. The course aimed to teach participants how to work with Wikimedia.

During two sessions and a practical workshop, the 22 participants developed skills to prepare and upload their own data and/or images to suitable wiki projects. The sessions covered editing Wikimedia projects, releasing data and/or images, tools for uploading material to Wikimedia projects, copyright, and working with Open Data and Creative Commons licenses.

Participants were enthusiastic and motivated, and with the assistance of dedicated Wikimedia volunteers, they achieved significant results. In the context of this training, 6 articles were initiated on Wikipedia, 46 pages were edited, 24 references were added, 34 images were added to Wikimedia Commons, and 146 edits were made on Wikidata. Eureka! History month on Wikipedia and content donation Museum of World Cultures

In October, the annual History Month (Maand van de Geschiedenis) took place, also on Wikipedia. This time, the theme was 'Eureka,' with plenty of focus on science and discoveries. This resulted in a great outcome: 46 new articles were created, 7 articles were supplemented, and 7 items were edited on Wikidata. The Wikipedia articles ranged from the Magellanic Stream to Ibn al-Saffar and from Pieter Uijlenbroek to the Translators' School of Toledo. In addition, the National Museum of World Cultures made a content donation consisting of 45 photos of scientific research in the former Dutch East Indies. Our special thanks go to coordinator Encycloon and all participants for their contributions!

Save the date: Dutch Public Domain Day celebration in Hilversum, january 12

Monday, January 1st marks Public Domain Day, celebrating the expiration of copyright restrictions on many works created by individuals who passed away in 1953. As of January 1st, their work enters the public domain, making it available for a wide range of purposes.

This time, the collection includes works from various painters, illustrators, photographers, writers, and architects. On Wikidata, you can find an overview of creators whose work becomes available. Public Domain Day 2024 will be celebrated on Friday, January 12th, at Beeld & Geluid in Hilversum. Admission is free, and you can register here. REBOOT Edit-a-thon about Media artists

With the project 'Media Art on Wikipedia,' LIMA aims to increase online visibility for media art. LIMA, in collaboration with the Network Archives Design and Digital Culture (NADD) and the New Institute, organized a special edit-a-thon on Saturday, November 25th, at the New Institute. This writing marathon was part of the REBOOT exhibition featuring digital art. On the sixth floor of the New Institute, 12 participants, guided by experienced Wikipedians, worked on enhancing, improving, and creating articles about media artists. This resulted in over 200 edits on Wikipedia and Wikidata, as well as a new article about media artist Dries Depoorter. Participants also received a guided tour of the exhibition by curator Sanneke Huisman, and artists Ali Eslami and the artist duo Lancel-Maat shared insights into their work. Afterward, they also posed for photos for Wikimedia Commons.

The museum held a Mihi whakatau (welcoming ceremony) for our summer students

Earlier in 2023, Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira successfully applied for a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation to improve articles on local suburbs and local history. As a part of this project, the Wikimedia Foundation and the museum co-funded four Wikipedia interns to join our summer student cohort, learning how to edit Wikipedia over the 2023/24 summer period.

The brief for our students is simple: create or improve articles related to the Auckland Region/Tāmaki Makaurau, based on what you feel passionate about, and what you feel will be beneficial for students learning about history. Currently, the students have discussed focusing on a few different aspects, including:

Students spent the first two weeks learning about Wikimedia, including the limitations and benefits of the platform, issues such as conflicts of interest, and learnt how to edit. We'd planned for students to start posting articles by week three, but one student wrote and published her first article only four days into the programme! By the end of week two, the students had published seven articles. The second week also included a guest speaker, history education specialist Mark Sheehan.

Natural history

Almorah Rock Forest and Takapuna Fossil Forest are two newly created articles that showcase Tāmaki Makaurau's natural history

The Almorah Rock Forest is a micro-ecoregion, restricted to 0.032 km2 on the Auckland isthmus. The forest formed 28,000 years ago, growing atop the vocalic scoria left by the Maungawhau / Mount Eden eruption. The rock forest is a unique environment, favouring plants that grow well in poor-soil environments. Most of the forest area was destroyed as the suburbs of Epsom and Newmarket developed. A large block of the rock forest, called Withiel Thomas Reserve, was gifted to the city of Auckland in 1948 by the family of naturalist Algernon Thomas.

Takapuna Fossil Forest is a petrified forest that formed approximately 190,000 years ago after lava flows from the Lake Pupuke volcano encased broadleaf forests in lava. The forest was likely exposed to the surface within the last 7,000 years, and much of the forest was destroyed in the 1970s. Currently, the forest is protected under the Auckland Unitary Plan as an Outstanding Natural Feature.

People

Tara Te Irirangi was the paramount chief of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki in the 19th century, during the early colonial period of Auckland. A figure in the Musket Wars and early land sales, Tara Te Irirangi is memorialised in many place names including the suburb of Ōtara and Te Irirangi Drive, a major arterial road in Auckland.

Ron Brownson was a prominent New Zealand curator at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and a figure in Aotearoa New Zealand's Gay Liberation Movement. Brownson was a major supporter of Pasifika art and artists, and was awarded an Montana New Zealand Book Award in 2008 for contributions to the book Bill Hammond: Jingle Jangle Morning.

Churches

Our Lady of the Assumption is a heritage-listed Catholic church located in Onehunga. Built in the Gothic Revival style by E. Mahoney and Son in 1889, the church has been a major feature of the Onehunga community for over 100 years.

St Barnabas Anglican Church in Mount Eden and St Peter's Anglican Church in Onehunga are two of the Selwyn churches: historic Anglican churches in Auckland built in the 1840s. The first woman mayor in the British Empire, Elizabeth Yates, is buried at St Peter's cemetery.

The GLAM-Wiki international conference was held in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, from November 16 to 18.

Kamila Neuman, Open Culture Manager at Wikimedia Poland offered two activities as part of the conference.

The first was a workshop “Sharing is caring, but who cares?” How can we tap into the collective knowledge & experience in the GLAM-Wiki movement The workshop was part of a broader discussion on effective ways to share knowledge within the movement, and was well attended, as about 30 people participated in groups to consider what participants' personal motivations for sharing knowledge are and what ways to learn from others are most effective. At the end, each group shared their thoughts, and Kamila concluded the workshop by encouraging us to reflect on the easiest and simplest steps we can take after the conference to better benefit from shared knowledge and experiences in GLAM-Wiki. Wikimedia Poland's second activity at the conference was a presentation as part of a joint panel on GLAM-Wiki case studies around the world, which took place in the main conference hall. During the session titled Do's and Don'ts in GLAM-Wiki: Lessons Learned from a Fresh Perspective, Kamila presented her thoughts after two years of working in the GLAM-Wiki field, the aim of which was to make the audience reflect more deeply on their own lessons learned from working with GLAM institutions. Find out Kamila's impressions of the conference: This is my first experience of attending an international GLAM-Wiki conference and it will definitely remain in my memory for a long time. It is remarkable to meet people from all over the world who are involved in GLAM-Wiki activities, especially since we work rather separately from each other on a daily basis and only meet on such rare occasions. I believe immensely, and my experiences at the conference only confirm this, that there is great power in the relationships and conversations that allow us to get to know each other and our work better. This is also what my workshop was about, where I wanted to see what motivations we have to share knowledge and experiences more regularly, so that we can also develop our relationships outside the conference meetings. And although the conference was very intense and passed quickly, I believe that such live meetings will help us look for and develop effective ways to build a network of strengthening relationships afterwards. This is also what I want to dedicate some of my work to in the new year.

WikiMatejko editing action with the National Museum in Krakow

November is an intensive time of activities for the WikiMatejko editing action organized jointly with the National Museum in Krakow. The goal of the action was to enhance Wikipedia and its related projects with high-quality content, illustrations, and data related to the artist, Matejko, and his life and work.

A total of 23 participants and 10 Wikipedians as trainers joined the action. To prepare the participants, two online training sessions were conducted on November 7 and 9 by Wikipedian Tomasz Wrona, with 22 newcomers and novices taking part. The training sessions were recorded and made available to the participants. Additionally, a checklist of the next steps for the action was provided. On November 28, group online consultations were held, with 5 participants attending. Furthermore, the National Museum in Krakow supported the participants by providing subject-matter experts who assisted in finding sources and digital resources from the Muza database system to enhance the articles being developed.

What are the plans for December and January 2024? We want to publish new and expanded articles, start activities to create open educational resources based on content from Wikimedia projects, and encourage participants in the activities to translate articles and complete the Wikidata.

A few words from Kamila Neuman regarding the action: Cooperation with the National Museum in Cracow is constantly developing, and I'm very happy about that because we trust each other, which encourages us to try new things. One of them is the WikiMatejko editing campaign, which focuses on building engagement around the museum's collection among the museum's audience, mainly students, and involving them in the community of new Wikipedia editors. We are already thinking about further initiatives to go one step further and increase access to open knowledge about art.


Catalan culture and showcasing Wikimedia on both side of the Atlantic

Vila Franca de Xira's Municipal Library welcomed a Wikipedia-editing workshop for the first time

It was a cloudy Saturday in Vila Franca de Xira, but a small group of new Wikipedia editors gathered at Fábrica das Palavras (the building Municipal Library of Vila Franca de Xira) on November 18th to learn the ropes. Sofia Matias, from Wikimedia Portugal, hosted the day-long workshop where five participants, between ages 20 and 70, were able to have their Wikipedia-related doubts cleared. Some of them even dipped their toes by creating their very first Wikipedia article.

The feedback from the library team and the participants was very good, and Wikimedia Portugal is now joining forces with the library to organize more activities like this at Fábrica das Palavras.

The Catalan Culture editathon returns to Lisbon and makes a debut in Porto

The Viquimarató de la Llengua Catalana is an annual event organized by Amical Wikimedia and the Secretary for the Language Policy of the region of Catalonia. Since 2021, Portugal has joined this celebration of Catalan language and culture, translating articles about from the Catalan Wikipedia to the Portuguese-language one, in gatherings organized by Xavier Magrinyà Minguell. After two years of successful events in Lisbon, Minguell took the Wikimarathon also to Porto, doubling the reach of the Catalan culture in the Portuguese and Mirandese Wikipedias.

The first meeting happened on November 24th at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Porto; a week later, on 29th November, another meeting happened at Biblioteca Camões, a public library in Lisbon. A total of 15 new editors joined these meetings, which focused on sports vocabularies.

Wikimedia Portugal on events and conferences: Jornadas WMES, GLAM Wiki and the National Meeting for Citizen Science

Wikimedia Portugal had delegates in multiple national and international events lasts month. In the beginning of the month, Sofia Matias and Miguel Mimoso Correia were at Jornadas WMES (Wikimedia Spain annual community gathering), where they presented some of the chapter's work regarding minority languages and the work done at the National Library of Portugal.

Rute Correia was at GLAM Wiki 2023, in Uruguay, presenting the activities and results of the first year of Wiki Loves Música Portuguesa (Wiki Loves Portuguese Music), and sharing some communication strategies for reframing Wikimedia as an infrastructure for open knowledge.

On the 27th and 28th of November, Wikimedia Portugal joined the National Meeting for Citizen Science, where Rute Correia showcased the power of Wikimedia for citizen science projects and for science dissemination.

The successful end of the second month of the Wikipedian in residence project at the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia marks a period of great achievement. Over this very productive month, a total of 304 new articles were written on Serbian Wikipedia. These articles give a good view of important exhibitions and biographies of esteemed members affiliated with the Association.

A total of 188 catalogs were digitized and uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. This concerted effort not only preserves the rich history encapsulated within these catalogs but also makes them widely accessible to a global audience. By digitizing these catalogs, this project not only contributes to the dissemination of artistic knowledge but also reinforces the commitment to fostering an open and collaborative approach to cultural documentation.

As the second month draws to a close, the Wikipedian in residence stands as a testament to the power of collaborative efforts in enriching and expanding the cultural heritage documented online. The synergy between the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia and Wikimedia Serbia continues to be a beacon of progressive engagement in the realm of cultural preservation and dissemination.

As the curtains close on the second month of our engaging Wikipedian in residence at the National Museum of Kraljevo, we are proud of the substantial impact and accomplishments achieved during this period. A total of 58 new articles were written on Serbian Wikipedia. These articles delve into the rich history of Kraljevo and Serbia in general, presenting detailed biographies of numerous renowned individuals from Kraljevo and its surrounding areas. The inclusion of these biographies not only adds depth to our understanding of the region but also serves as a tribute to the notable figures who have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.

Furthermore, the project has been dedicated to the enhancement of existing content, with 34 articles being improved. This commitment to refining and expanding information ensures that our digital cultural heritage remains comprehensive and accurate, providing an invaluable resource for those seeking insights into the historical and cultural nuances of Kraljevo.

In a concerted effort to make this wealth of information widely accessible, a total of 330 files have been uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. These files, ranging from images to documents, serve as visual and textual anchors, enriching the digital landscape with authentic glimpses into the cultural and historical heritage encapsulated within the National Museum of Kraljevo.

Spanning from November 16 to 18, the GLAM Wiki Conference was held in Montevideo, Uruguay, serving as a dynamic space for the convergence of ideas and insights within the GLAM Wiki enthusiast and Cultural institutions. The conference delved into many crucial topics, spotlighting the GLAM program's evolution, the seamless integration of artificial intelligence into Wiki projects, and the envisioned trajectory of the program in the future.

Gorana Gomirac, the representative of Wikimedia Serbia was presenting the contributions of the Wikimedia Serbia GLAM Program. With a particular emphasis on the Wikipedian In Residence project, the role as one of the program's keystones, underscoring its significance as a catalyst for fostering collaboration, knowledge dissemination, and cultural preservation was highlighted.

Amidst the enriching discussions, the Let's Connect program spearheaded two insightful sessions during the GLAM-Wiki Conference. These sessions encouraged in-depth dialogues surrounding the intricate web of partnerships between Wikimedia affiliates and cultural institutions. Participants engaged in conversations, exploring the multifaceted challenges that affiliates encounter in the implementation of their activities, especially in the field of digitizing cultural heritage. The collaborative exchange not only illuminated shared obstacles but also paved the way for innovative solutions and strengthened bonds between the Wikimedia affiliates and cultural institutions.

National Historical Museums of Sweden contributions; Photo memories from all over the world engage the community; Museum of medieval photo safari

National Historical Museums of Sweden contributes with images to Wikimedia Commons

During the years 2013-2016 we contributed to Wikimedia Commons with roughly 46 000 high resolution images of artifacts in the collections of The Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and the Hallwyl Museum.

Since then, Wikimedia Commons has been, by far, the most used platform for viewing images and information about the collections held by the National Historical Museums of Sweden. The 46 000 images are shown roughly 5 million times every month.

Now, after a few years of system changes and the development of a new online collection search interface, we have finally reached a good enough digital infrastructure to be able to resume our uploads of new images to Wikimedia Commons.

This time around, we are making use of another method of uploading images to Wikimedia Commons. The project Usable Authorities for Data-driven Cultural Heritage Research – a collaboration between us, Wikimedia Sweden and the Swedish Nationalmuseum – has given us the tools and knowledge to use OpenRefine for working with Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.

Thanks to this we have now done a first pilot upload of 1200 images from the Swedish History Museum and the Economy Museum. The images depict artifacts currently on display in the exhibition The Viking World at the Swedish History Museum.

Photo memories from all over the world engage the community

Together with the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, another large contribution was made to the project 100 000 Bildminnen. The photos in this batch span a large thematic and geographic spectrum. There's, for example, many hundreds photos from the open-air museum Skansen, located in Stockholm, which opened over a hundred years ago and operates to this day. In the photos you can mostly see children in traditional folk dress from different parts of Sweden. We also have images from other parts of the world, like Moscow and Siberia, Australia, Tunisia and Jordan.

With such a great variety of topics, it's hard for us or the museum staff to identify the depicted enviroments and motifs. In order to encourage the Swedish Wikipedia community to contribute, we organized a competition with prizes generously donated by the Nordic Museum. And to say that we were surprised by the contributions, both in the competition and outside of it, is an understatement. Many eagle-eyed Wikipedians worked together to make the photos easier to find and use by improving their descriptions, captions and categorization. Just look at these examples!

Another sign that the images from the Nordic Museum are engaging the community is that one of the images of a SAS airplane, after being lovingly retouched, has been nominated to the Featured Picture title!

The Stockholm Museum of Medieval has closed pending a move to a new location in a few years, and after the doors were locked we were allowed in for a photo safari to document the building, artifacts and objects in the museum. So far several photos have been added to the category for the museum and more will be uploaded. Please see what the article looks like in your language and if needed this source can be used to update accordingly, and feel free to add some images while you are editing.

Fifty article milestone

Khalili Foundation

The Khalili Foundation was mentioned in the Wikimedia UK annual awards, announced on 26 November. The Best Partnership award gave an honourable mention jointly to the Khalili Foundation for sharing images and data about Islamic art, and for Dr Glaire Anderson of the University of Edinburgh for using these materials in her courses about the art and architecture of the Caliphal era. For an example of educational materials using the images, see this image grid of Islamic art from 650 to 1250. Many thanks to whoever nominated us!

As well as promoting the cultural diversity of Wikipedia, the Khalili Foundation/ Wikimedia partnership has been improving articles about cultural diversity itself. Cultural diversity, now having been substantially rewritten, has now been submitted for open peer review. This is a process in English Wikipedia in which a volunteer reviews the article with a view to helping prepare it for a quality badge such as Good Article. This is an open, public process in which comments from anyone in the community are welcome. After some tweaks to the Musa va 'Uj article, it has been put up for Good Article review.

The article about the Empire of the Sultans exhibition has been fact-checked, published, and submitted to Did You Know review, becoming the 50th new Wikipedia article created by this project. The next article, being worked on in draft, is about the Heaven on Earth: Art from Islamic Lands exhibition. In past months I assembled image galleries of objects that were shown in these exhibitions; this month I have been using them to illustrate the Wikipedia articles.

The Arabic Wikipedia gave the Anatolian war mask a Featured Image award and posted it on the main page as Picture Of The Day on 29 November. This is the ninth image from the Khalili Collections to be given this award by Arabic Wikipedia. Persian Wikipedia ran an image from the Anis al-Hujjaj on the front page as its Picture Of The Day on 2 December.

The DYK for Gulshan-i 'Ishq ran on 19 November for 24 hours on the front page of English Wikipedia. This is the third DYK from this project this year, and the 24th from the project in total. There were 4.77 million visitors to the front page on that day, who will have seen the thumbnail image. 5,536 clicked through to the article.

The Wikipedians of the Islamic Civilization User Group hosted a webinar about the Khalili Collections. We had an 80-minute presentation and discussion about the two Islam-related collections and their representation on the Wikimedia platforms, with simultaneous translation for Arabic and English. A video of my initial half-hour presentation has been released on YouTube in English and in Arabic.

There were no new image uploads or translations this month. GLAMorgan reports 5,584,000 image views in November.


AvoinGLAM at GLAM Wiki 2023


Meeting the global community

At AvoinGLAM, we prioritized joining the GLAM Wiki 2023 Conference in our yearly activities. As a group of four, we gave altogether five presentations.

Tove Ørsted presented AvoinGLAM Theory of Change, the work we are doing to clarify our vision to others as well as to discuss it among ourselves. AvoinGLAM has been established in 2012, and we have run cultural hackathons and done advocacy towards open culture locally and internationally. In our work, we find ways to include different domains of heritage and tackle the emerging questions, relating to for example the ethics of open sharing. We work in the intersection of Wikimedia, Creative Commons and Open Knowledge, and we need to put extra effort in explaining our perspectives.

Tuukka Hastrup presented the work that has been done specifically this year to bring the Wikidocumentaries project forward in Wikidocumentaries for collaboration. We mentored a Google Summer of Code intern, Zexi Gong, who realized the workflow from displaying images from external repositories on Wikidocumentaries and choosing to upload them to Wikimedia Commons with SDC statements. Tuukka also talked about image faceting in Wikidocumentaries that made use of the SDC data.

Kaisa Haverinen gave a lightning talk about Reimagining GLAM residencies within the Wikimedia movement: sprints, international residency positions, research or artistic collaboration, combining formats with hackathons or wikiprojects, using heritage houses, hacking on ferries, joining field trips and summer camps, for example.

Susanna Ånäs talked about Stretching Meta for displaying the Wiki Loves Living Heritage elements and programme on Meta-Wiki. The Wiki Loves Living Heritage Bazaar invited to share experiences in arranging activities in the project. The intensive hour was a memorable experience to repeat in suitable occasions.

3,000 medical images on Wikimedia Commons through the Helpdesk

In the first larger project supported by the Helpdesk of the Content Partnerships Hub, 3,000 medical images from Smart Servier have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, in collaboration with Netha Hussain, who started the project as a volunteer and ended up requesting the support.

Netha says: "In receiving help for doing this project, I will be able to acquire the skill sets required for batch uploading similar images from medical repositories. I maintain a list of open access medical repositories, and the skills I learn from doing the SMART SERVIER project will eventually be helpful for other content partnership programs, particularly those of which I have named in the repository.”

In a blogpost on Diff, we explain how you can make use of the images.

The SMART Servier collection contains uniformly styled elements that can be used in harmony to create flowcharts, diagrams, posters and other visual aids to illustrate complex biological processes and concepts. Some of the use cases are as follows:

  1. To illustrate concepts where actual photographs are very hard or impossible to create, such as illustrating phenomena happening at the molecular or cellular level.
  2. To illustrate concepts where using original photographs of body parts/organs would be disturbing (as in illustrating phenomena related to genital organs) or offensive (as in illustrating conditions such as obesity).
  3. To illustrate concepts where a representative image of a person or an organ is more ideal than a real photograph, as in illustrating the method for measurement of arm circumference.
  4. In projects where simple representations are preferred over complex diagrams or photos, such as in Simple Wikipedia or Wiktionary.


2023 Living Heritage elements are added to Wiki Loves Living Heritage

New 2023 Living Heritage elements have been added to Wiki Loves Living Heritage

The Eighteenth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was held in Botswana Tuesday 5 to Friday 8 December 2023. As part of the formalities, 55 new heritage elements were added to the UNESCO Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage. 45 elements were added in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, 6 in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, and 4 in the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices. All of these are now also added to Wikidata, and they can be viewed in Wiki Loves Living Heritage on their own page, as part of UNESCO elements list and individual country lists.

Join checking the information and enriching the Wikimedia projects!

  • Quality check if the nominations have been associated with the correct items. Link them to associated other items.
  • Create and link Wikimedia Commons categories to images, create SDC statements. Upload new images, and join your local focal point in this quest.

Presentations about bringing Living Heritage to Wikimedia projects

Different aspects of bringing Living Heritage data to Wikimedia projects have been presented in different Wikimedia events.

In WikidataCon, the presentation Bring Your Data to Wiki Loves Living Heritage gave an overview of how data has been used in the Wiki Loves Living Heritage project.
In GLAM Wiki 2023, the presentation Stretching Meta described in-depth how the limits of wiki editing were tested to create the Wiki Loves Living Heritage pages. There's also sunshine is sight: Meta is a great place to share learnings in the Wikimedia movement, and more effort should be put into making it attractive for visitors and editors alike.
Finally, the presentation Modelling Living Heritage in the Wikidata Data Modelling Days delved into detail in modelling data for living heritage. View the recording.

Moving forward

AvoinGLAM will continue supporting working with Living Heritage in 2024. The global campaign ends, but the practices and resources will be made available in different program formats affiliates and groups around the world wish to work with.

  • We will also start developing a global coordination structure for working with living heritage topics during 2024 together with all organizers.

Heartfelt thanks to all participants!

Inventories have been added from more 100 countries, activities have been organized in more than 30. The number of articles around living heritage keeps on rising due to the increase of articles but also as more and more elements are recognized as living heritage.

The project has laid a firm foundation for collaborations between intangible cultural heritage focal points and Wikimedia affiliates for the years to come. It is also doing essential work in finding ways to strike the balance between opening and protecting. Rather yet, not putting the objectives against each other but side by side: facilitating opening knowledge in ways that are respectful of the rights of the people and the cultures represented.

The work has been a major effort from our partners. Leena Marsio from the Finnish Heritage Agency and Jorijn Neyrinck from Workshop intangible heritage Flanders have put their heart and soul to this project. Sadik Shahadu has been a great companion and communicator. The European Heritage Days, Workshop intangible heritage Flanders & Flemish Commission for UNESCO in Belgium, Quebec Council for Living Heritage, the Finnish Heritage Agency, the Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the Federal Office of Culture in Switzerland provided financial support for the project, allowing to fully focus on this project. Thank you to Creative Commons and Wikimedia Culture & Heritage and all the speakers and presenters in the webinars.

The activities are the result of the work of numerous Wikimedians and focal points and other local actors who have found their own ways to express their local heritage.
