editGeneralized in the early 19th c. from oxide (which has its ending from French acide, itself from Latin -idus in acidus), and gradually displaced earlier -uret, both introduced in the English translation of de Morveau, Lavoisier et al.'s 1787 book Méthode de nomenclature chimique.
