Image misnomer
editThe image on the Syzygium page titled Syzygium oleosum (blue lilly pilly) looks more like Syzygium paniculatum (magenta lilly pilly). It's very common to confuse S.oleosum, S.paniculatum, and S.australe. I've cultivated all three species, and am very familiar with their differences, and just looking at the picture on the page it looks more like S.paniculatum for these reasons: S.oleosum has a more blue or mauve coloured fruit rather than this pink colour; also, S.oleosum typically has a more open bottom on the fruit and is typically broader - S.paniculatum is more this shape. Anyway, I will leave this comment up for a little while before changing the image caption. Cheers. John Moss (talk) 14:08, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Duplicating synonyms
edit@Paine Ellsworth: I understand your edit, but the synonym is mentioned in the lede of the taxa's article, I am not sure that the name has been used much in recent times, I don't think that there is a mass of confusion over the name, and if we put all the synonyms for all these plants (S. nervosum has 30 synonyms listed in POWO, we would have a very large unwieldy list. So I have reverted your edit. Please discuss more if you feel strongly about it. Brunswicknic (talk) 10:22, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
- Ref.: Template talk:Taxonomy/Syzygieae... Well no, not really. Just thought that, because there was a Wikidata page for both, at d:Cleistocalyx operculatus and d:Syzygium nervosum, plus a Commons category for both, at c:Cleistocalyx operculatus and c:Syzygium nervosum, that the edit might help to clarify things for readers. You do what you think is best. P.I. Ellsworth ed. put'r there 14:21, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Paine Ellsworth: Yes, looking deeper, I see that Cleistocalyx was used quite a bit recently, so it got up and was accepted for a while as a separate genus and then has been subsumed back into Syzygium. So some databases still have it up. I will add a note at the bottom of the list to reflect its recent use. Thank you for the head's up and your work on WP. Current edit and things to do
editHello, hope you and yours are well. I have edited the Syzygium a bit, taking out redlinked species that did not have additional points of interest (someone put additional points there, so why not leave them) and added all the bluelinked species (with wp pages) from the complete list of species. In a couple of cases I indicated a name change from an existing bluelinked page, but I have not yet changed those species to the accepted name. I hope to do so, but Aporosa octandra is a "highly variable and widespread" species and taking some days to wrestle. Of course if you find this sort of thing easy...
