Material deliberately dropped in merge
[edit]I am changing Shadow puppet, which was more or less a stub, into a redirect here. The following passage there was the one substantive thing at that article. However, it was uncited and smacks of fiction or legend, so I have not merged it (pending citation):
- Shadow puppetry originated in China two thousand years ago. The legend of its creation tells of the Emperor WuTi and his favorite courtesan, Lady Li. Lady Li died an untimely death which sent the Emperor into a depression so deep that he would not govern, eat or sleep. His court magician was summoned to him and asked to bring LadyLi back to life. The magician had an idea: by cutting out the figure of Lady Li and casting its shadow on a candle lit screen, he retold the courtship of the lovers. Emperor WuTi was lifted from his depression as he saw his love come to life. The Chinese believe that the spirit is manifested in the shadow and brought to Earth through the art of the shadow puppetteer. Emperor WuTi declared Shadow Puppet Theater a High Art form to be brought to all corners of his empire. And so it was.

Shadow play in India
[edit]I think this article diserves some references to India, as the shadow play was practiced for telling the Ramayana and Mahabharata. This is however not the subject I am comfortable at, so maybe somebody else can take up the lead. --Jdesmet 02:08, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
The Turkish section of this article (which is very small) refers to Karagöz as "the Turkish form of shadow play". However, nowhere in the Karagöz article does it reference shadow theatre - it is merely a form of puppet theatre. Should the section be redone, deleted, or left alone? Linkspam
[edit]I've twice now removed the link Asian Collection at the Center for Puppetry Arts. It looks like WP:LINKSPAM to me. It does not appear to be a reference for anything. I'm not even sure how it relates to the information where it was added. I've not yet looked into how it was first added. --Ronz (talk) 19:14, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
- It is not any form of spam, but instead serves to enhance knowledge of this subject for our users. By the way, how did you come across this page? Badagnani (talk) 20:44, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Badagnani for detailed discussions of similar situations like this one where obviously inappropriate links are argued to be somehow valid for reasons that are never actually given. --Ronz (talk) 23:57, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
The link was added here. Maybe the link was added in error, or perhaps the page has changed. No matter what, the article has nothing that I can tell to do with the associated information, "The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia has an extensive variety of Chinese shadow puppets in their Asian collection." --Ronz (talk) 23:59, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure if it's spam or just someone who doesn't get what external links are for, but it clearly has no business being on this article. DreamGuy (talk) 15:00, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
History section needed
[edit]There is a lot of country sections with individual histories, but no overview of the historical development. --Thorseth (talk) 09:11, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Тhe Adventures of Prince Achmed
[edit]Тhe Adventures of Prince Achmed probably deserves some mention in this article. I keep my fuzzy paws off stuff, nowadays. Kid Bugs (talk) 20:48, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
- I've seen The Adventures of Prince Achmed shadow animation in animation film festival in Jakarta several years ago, I think it would be great and worth to be mentioned in shadow play article, please do so. (Gunkarta (talk) 09:40, 14 March 2011 (UTC)).
Congratulations!

Overlaid images
[edit]@RexxS: I am trying the overlaid template in this article in several sections, and I seem to be doing something wrong. I was trying to overlay the map into the bottom 70% right corner of the other image, and probably got the entries wrong. What should it be? If you show me one case, I may be able to figure out the other cases. Thanks, Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 14:10, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Ms Sarah Welch: Have a look at the annotations I've made and see if they help. To move it to another corner, you do need to know both the height and width of each image, but you can simply preview a thumbnail at the width you want and use the browser 'inspect' tool to read its height (e.g. right-click on the thumbnail and pick 'inspect' in Chrome or similar browsers). Of course you can trim the move a few pixels either way for aesthetics once you're in roughly the right place. Let me know if you run into any problems.
- P.S. Incidentally, you can make the frame taller and move the map down a bit if you find it's hiding too much of the image.
- Anyway, you can experiment once you have the basics working. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 16:34, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- @RexxS: Thats it, that is what I was looking for. Thanks, Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:48, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

China Shadow Play
[edit]I've done some research and there is more that could be added in the China section. For example, different styles of shadow play and the regions that display these styles. Thoughts? Applegirl1234 (talk) 20:40, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
