The Park Library at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host Newspapers in North Carolina Edit-a-thon.

The edit-a-thon is open to the public. We will improve current and historic N.C. newspaper entries in Wikipedia, focusing on smaller circulation papers and African American papers. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject needed. Library resources will be on hand along with a list of suggested topics.

WHERE: UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, Park Library, second floor of Carroll Hall, on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.

WHO: Anyone!

  • Experienced or new Wikipedians (We will provide assistance with Wikipedia formatting and syntax.).
  • Amateur historians or research pros (We will have a selection of resources and a mini reference desk available for your use. We can also pull additional materials from the UNC Libraries collections as needed.).
  • UNC faculty, staff, and students.

  • A laptop. We'll help you access the University's wireless network.
  • Create an account ahead of time here: Create a Wikipedia Editor Account. (Pseudonyms are encouraged, as is an email for password recovery.) Volunteers will also be available onsite to help you create an account.

The following are articles that UNC Libraries staff have identified as needing attention, but participants are encouraged to pursue their own interests as well.

Start with Stubs (an article deemed too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject.)

  • N.C. newspaper stubs Papers that don't have much info.
    • Introduction along the lines of this:
      • The Amherst Bee is an American newspaper established in 1879 which serves the Buffalo and Williamsville area of New York, and is part of the Bee Group Newspapers.[1] It is published weekly on Wednesdays. Its estimated circulation is 27,000. [1]
