Imagine reviews

[edit]

Hey there!  :) I haven't seen you hard at work lately, just wondering if you were taking a break? BOZ (talk) 01:21, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have been doing some other stuff...The weather is supposed to be really bad this weekend, though, so maybe I'll get back to the reviews. It would be more fun if I had the reviewed articles handy, but my AD&D things are all over the place, mostly stored in boxes, and I haven't a clue where I put what. :-) Drow69 (talk) 13:21, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hah, no problem - do what you can. BOZ (talk) 06:01, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, just wondering if you were ever going to be able to get back into this? :) BOZ (talk) 18:20, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly. Right now I have only sporadic access to the PC where I have the Imagine pdfs...maybe if I transfer them to my ipad.Drow69 (talk) 13:47, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Aweseomly, awesomely, awesome!  :) Truly wonderful, great work all around, thank you for taking care of all these reviews single-handedly. Hope I didn't bug you too much about it. ;) Don't be a stranger to D&D articles - with a screen name like that, I think you don't have much of a choice, LOL. Featuring your work on Wikipedia's front page: DYKs

[edit]
Thank you for your recent articles, including Cabinet Scheidemann, which I read with interest. When you create an extensive and well referenced article, you may want to have it featured on Wikipedia's main page in the Did You Know section. Articles included there will be read by thousands of our viewers. To do so, add your article to the list at T:TDYK. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

[edit]
Thank you for your recent articles, including Cabinet Scheidemann. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. This can help you too, as the WikiProject members will often defend your work from deletion and try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:56, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Anybody can tag an article with any project, so feel free to do so whenever you think the template is missing. It's kind of like categories but aimed primarily at editors rather than regular users. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 15:55, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Treaty of Versailles

[edit]

Hi, I am currently working on various ways to improve the article. This diff would appear to be one of those areas. Do you have a source you can insert into the article to support that over 40 delegates did not even vote on the issue? Regards EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 14:37, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All I am saying is that there were 421 delegates in the National Assembly at the time - there are plenty of sources for that. The number of votes cast did not come from me (off the top of my head I only have this [1], which shows the for and against, but not the abstentions. This (sorry, German again) [2] is not really a RS, but it makes the same point...there were over 40 delegates who did not vote/were not around for the vote. Good luck, this page really could do with some improvements. :-) Drow69 (talk) 15:20, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Kilfenora Céilí Band

[edit]

What makes you think The Kilfenora Céilí Band is not notable? Or is it just a request for sources? (I agree that the article needs some TLC). The Banner talk 18:58, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, my personal view is irrelevant. I could be a huge fan of these guys and still question the need for a WP page. As I understand it, notability is established by showing that the subject is covered in a non-trivial way by several independent (i.e. secondary) reliable sources. This page offers us three sources as refs. The first is the band's website (=not an independent source). The second one is a dead link. Tracing it through waybackmachine brings us to this https://web.archive.org/web/20100817233327/http://www.nellgalvin.com/index.html. Not too mention the issue whether that website qualifies as a RS, but this pretty much defines "trivial mention" for me - the band played a guest gig at the place. That's it. The final ref goes to a page which does not mention the band at all but is about a song. Again: you may or may not consider this a RS. Rather than suggest this as an AfD I think "in dubio pro reo" is appropriate here - so that's what the tag does, it flags this as a page which fails to establish notability. See here for what I mean: Wikipedia:Notability (music). Actually, we should have put this on the The Kilfenora Céilí Band talkpage, now that I think about it... :-) Drow69 (talk) 19:45, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So it is sources to prove the notability you want, no real doubt about their notability? The Banner talk 20:32, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. They may well be notable but the page fails to offer evidence for it. This seems to be a general problem with some Irish bands - it is quite depressing that even De Dannan is really bad at showing notability and Charlie Piggott does not have a page. But according to [[3]] this is the way to go in cases like that. Drow69 (talk) 20:47, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ebert section

[edit]

I've been thinking about how to resolve this issue without getting too deep in citation wars and/or major re-writes.

How about we just use the German article for the basis of the introductory paragraph.

This seems fairly measured, and does mention his career from 1920-23, i.e. defending the Weimar government against right-wing/Imperialist coup d'etats. Sound reasonable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.59.153.210 (talk) 22:19, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"In den Jahren 1919 bis 1923 ließ Ebert mehrere Aufstände von revolutionären Sozialisten mit Waffengewalt niederschlagen. Auch gegen Putschversuche von rechts ging er 1920 und 1923 entschieden vor." This pretty much sums it up...as far as it goes. But it needs to reflect the actual contents of the article. I'd thus also be partial to just deleting the unsourced part of the article that covers the issue and just have someone start from scratch on this question. With that section gone it would not be necessary to refer to it in the lead.
At the time, it definitely was a complex situation that is very difficult to summarize in a few lines - especially for readers who know little or nothing about the historical context. Although Ebert certainly opposed the Lüttwitz-Kapp and Hitler putsches, the fact remains that the majority of those killed by government forces during his time in office were revolutionaries from the left. Which is kind of counterintuitive, considering he himself had been one of the leaders of the (leftist) revolution.Drow69 (talk) 15:39, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think for an Anglophone audience, we risk blurring the distinctions between the SPD and the KPD. That's the rub, imho. The easiest thing to do would be remove "nominally the same" (as I've expressed in the Friedrich Ebert talk page) or link to this article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartacist_uprising. Maybe both. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.197.91.136 (talk) 04:09, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
See the article talk page. Unfortunately, the Spartacist page is completely unsourced. It is also strikingly different from the German version which correctly identifies the issue of Eichhorn getting fired as the immediate cause of the uprising and describes the differences between the various socialist parties over how (or if) to proceed with the revolution. IMO linking to that mess would not be a big help.Drow69 (talk) 13:33, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Drow, thanks for your work on Wikipedia. Thought it would help if I explained the logic behind some edits you changed at the above article. "Connexion" is a valid spelling, although less common that "connection", and is etymologically more accurate as it derives from the Latin "connexio". I usually translate administrative area of a town (confusingly Stadt, the same word as for the "town" itself) as "borough" to distinguish it from "municipality" (Gemeinde), which is that of a village. Otherwise we lose the difference between town and village in the translation. This is covered in the translation conventions of WikiProject Germany. Also I'm unclear why you de-linked "Amt (country subdivision)" - is the latter historically or legally incorrect in this case? Maybe I will learn something! Cheers. --Bermicourt (talk) 19:28, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I was away for a while. Trying to remember that edit... As to connexion, true - I just made that change to the more frequently used form. By looking at that edit, it does not look like I delinked "Amt" at all...I just thought the prior translation of "Amt Bergen" with "Bergen Office" confusing and replaced it. Before my edit, the article further read "Today the town of Bergen acts as a local borough in the northern part of Celle district". Not sure what this use of borough is supposed to mean. "Borough" makes sense as a translation of "Stadtteil" or even "Ortsteil", although in many communities the latter can refer to formerly independent villages - not what you think of when you read "borough". But Bergen is not a Stadtteil at all. It is a town located in the Celle district. So my understanding of WP conventions is: City = Grossstadt, Town = Stadt, District = Kreis, Borough = Stadtteil. Agreed? Drow69 (talk) 15:48, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, "parishes". I'd avoid this at all costs, but that is probably due to the confusion the term generates when it comes to places in Ireland. :-) For Ortsteile or Stadtteile I'd definitely go with borough.Drow69 (talk) 15:55, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This whole area is a minefield! Totally agree City = Grossstadt, Town = Stadt, District = Kreis. As for borough, there is no universal definition in English, but it seems to be used in 2 ways. One is as a quarter or district of a city or large town - this is the sense in which you are using it. The second is to mean the administrative area of a town which may sweep up neighbouring villages. This is the sense that I have used it in as it neatly matches Stadt when used to mean the area, not just the town itself. For example, Stadt Bergen comprises the town of Bergen itself and several geographically separate villages. So to translate Stadt as town (as often happens) doesn't work. Becklingen is not "a village in the town of Bergen" despite what the template says at the bottom; in fact it's a good 4 miles from the town (trust me I've been there!). But to say Becklingen is in the "borough" of Bergen makes more sense. Of course, you can use other words, but they all have problems e.g. "municipality" then clashes with Gemeinde, "district" with Kreis and so on. Of course, if you translate Kreis as county (which the British Embassy and British Forces do), you can use "district" for Stadt, but that's not popular. Finally Stadtteil and Ortsteil - whew. Well Stadtteil could be translated "quarter", "district" or "borough". None is wrong, but again the last 2 clash with other uses. Ortsteil could be either "village" or "municipality", but with the clear implication of being subordinate to or part of the borough... or whatever we call it. I did resolve one day to research all this is great detail and come up with a coherent proposal for Wikipedia, but every time I look at it I think - oh heck! Bermicourt (talk) 20:59, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You are right. I've been in Bergen a couple of times, but Becklingen is not on the B3, so I don't think I've ever passed through. Bergen is one of many municipalities called "Stadt" that include outlying villages. In some WP articles these are referred to as "outlying centres", which is less than ideal as it suggests that these villages are more urban than they actually are. Personally, I like the term "municipality" as it is generic and not associated with any particular administrative structure in the UK or the US (such as county). AFAIK every Stadt is a Gemeinde (municipality), but not every Gemeinde has the status of Stadt - i.e. using municipality when referring to a town is generally not wrong. Look at Sylt (municipality) for a particular confusing case - Westerland gave up its status as Stadt when it merged into this new Gemeinde. I think in most cases it may be a good idea to use the German original, then put a rough translation in brackets, such as "the former independent village of Becklingen has been an Ortsteil (borough) of Bergen since 1973". Fortunately, German and English are similar enough for this to work...it would be much harder to do this, e.g., for China. However, Germany is not the only country with confusing levels of administration - I still haven't figured out the deal with the "ceremonial counties" like Dorset. :-) Drow69 (talk) 15:07, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hahaha. Dorset is a county and has been for centuries, although its boundaries have changed. Administratively it has lost Poole and Bournemouth which are "unitary authorities" (a horrible term IMHO) but "ceremonially" they are included. You're right that technically Gemeinde is a generic term like municipality, but in practice they seem to prefer Stadt which thus has a confusing dual meaning. And then there are Verbandsgemeinden, Katastralgemeinden, Gemarkungen, Flurstücke and Verwaltungsgemeinschaften and so it goes on. I tend to use an English equivalent and put the German original in brackets to help the reader's flow, but I don't think it matters too much. Bermicourt (talk) 17:14, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kreis

[edit]

Hi Drow. I've explained why 'district' is not a great translation of 'Kreis' and that 'county' is at least as good if not better. Both are acceptable on Wikipedia, so I'd be grateful if you didn't go around changing 'county' to 'district' and I'll do the same vice-versa. Thanks. --Bermicourt (talk) 19:44, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really care what you "have explained". Where? To whom? According to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Germany/Conventions#States_and_administrative_regions "district" is the way to go according to the consensus. If you have a problem with that have it changed at the project and I will be more than willing to go along with it. IMO it makes zero sense to confuse readers with two different translations. Also, pls note that I "do not go around changing" things from a to b. That sounds like I edit-bomb random pages with just this one change and then move on. If I have come across "county" on some page I replaced it with "district" according to the project-preferred translation. Thanks for wasting my time.Drow69 (talk) 15:05, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
