Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *srɯɡ) : semantic (cereal; grain) + phonetic (OC *srɯɡ). Specialization of (OC *srɯɡ).

Etymology 1

[edit]

Probably related to (OC *s.r̥ˤəʔ, “to pluck”) (Baxter, 1992; Sagart, 1999; Baxter and Sagart, 2014). See there for more.

Schuessler (2007) compares it to Proto-Lolo-Burmese *C-šak (to pluck; to pick (a fruit, etc.)), as well as Khmer ច្រូត (crout, to reap; to harvest).

Pronunciation

  • sit - vernacular;
  • sek/siak - literary.
