[edit]Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠣᠷᠤᠰ᠋ (Orus, “Russia”), from Middle Mongol 斡羅思 (orus, “Rusʹ”), from Old East Slavic Русь (Rusĭ). Initial o- was an epenthesis determined by vowel harmony, as natively Mongolian does not allow a word-initial liquid consonant.
