[edit]From Old Norse þvers, from Proto-Germanic *þwerhas (“across”), cognate with Swedish tvers, Swedish tvärs, Old English þwēores, Middle High German twerhes, Middle Low German dwers (adj), Dutch dwars (adj). An adverbial genitive of the adjective *þwerhaz (“cross, adverse”) (Danish tvær).
