[edit]From Middle Low German stevel, cognate with German Stiefel, Dutch stevel (Late Old Norse styfill, Norwegian støvel and Swedish stövel also come from Low German). Borrowed from Old French esteval, from Latin aestīvālis (“for summer use”).
