Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]The sense "to coax, sweet-talk" is inherited from Middle Dutch payen, which derives from Old French paiier (“to pay; to satisfy”). The sense "to spawn" is probably etymologically identical, but the details are uncertain.
