päron på träd [pears on a tree]

Etymology

[edit]

From Old Swedish pæra, pærun, from Old Norse pera f, from Vulgar Latin *pira, originally the plural of Latin pirum, but reanalyzed as feminine singular, +‎ -on (neutral noun-forming suffix; used in the names of fruits and berries). The sense "parent" probably originates from the similarity to English parent.
