[edit]Inherited from Old Spanish axedrez, borrowed from Arabic شِطْرَنْج (šiṭranj) via Andalusian Arabic, from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭲𐭫𐭠𐭭𐭢 (cʾtlʾng /čatrang/), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga).
