From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *sinaʀ (ray of light) (c.f. Fijian siga (sun), Malay sinar, Nias sino, Samoan masina (moon), and Tausug sinag (brightness)), from Proto-Austronesian *siNaʀ (sun) (compare Amis cidal (sun) and Sakizaya cilal (sun)).
