Back-formation from plural barinjë, from earlier *bar, from Proto-Albanian *bara, from Proto-Indo-European *bher- (to carry). Compare Old High German baro (man, husband).[1] A connection with ari (bear) has also been proposed (compare Basque hartz (bear) and Basque artzain (shepherd)), though ari was originally arth prior to the loss of the -th ending by mistake.
