From Latin arcus (“bow, arc”), as they represent an angle or arc. Compare etymology of arch.

1. (mathematics) Used to form the names of inverse trigonometric functions, and the symbols for these functions.

2. (mathematics, sometimes proscribed) Alternative form of ar- used to form the names of inverse hyperbolic trigonometric functions, and the symbols for these functions.

Usage notes

The use of arc- with hyperbolic functions is sometimes discouraged, as the term arc implies a circular angle. The forms with ar- (derived from hyperbolic area) are more common anyway due to being shorter.
