Etymology

[edit]

From Latin arcus (bow, arc), as they represent an angle or arc. Compare etymology of arch.

Prefix

[edit]

arc-

  1. (mathematics) Used to form the names of inverse trigonometric functions, and the symbols for these functions.
    arc-sine (British), arcsine (US)
    arctan
  2. (mathematics, sometimes proscribed) Alternative form of ar- used to form the names of inverse hyperbolic trigonometric functions, and the symbols for these functions.

Usage notes

[edit]

The use of arc- with hyperbolic functions is sometimes discouraged, as the term arc implies a circular angle. The forms with ar- (derived from hyperbolic area) are more common anyway due to being shorter.
