Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *kroːl, *kʷroːl) : semantic + phonetic (OC *kʰʷroːl).

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kroj (shellfish, shell). From the same root derives (OC *roːl, “aquatic snail”).

Perhaps related to Proto-Mon-Khmer *kloʔ (snail, shellfish) (Schuessler, 2007).
