Etymology
[edit]Attested somewhat late, in Warring States period's texts.
A Southeast Asian area word (Alves 2015).
- Per Schuessler 2007, most likely of Austroasiatic origin. Compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *truŋ (“stable, sty, cage”) and *kruŋ (“to confine”) in Shorto 2006, whence Khmer ទ្រុង (trŭng, “cage”), ក្រុង (krŏng, “to confine”), Kuy thrùŋ (“cage”), potentially Vietnamese chuồng (“cage; shed; coop”), and so forth. The Vietnamese may possibly be an early Chinese loan instead (Alves 2018).
- STEDT reconstructs Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kruːŋ (“cage”), based on e.g. Garo gring (“cage”), Burmese ချိုင့် (hkyuing.). Schuessler thinks these were also borrowed from Austroasiatic.
- Other forms include Proto-Tai [Term?], whence Thai กรง (grong, “cage”); and Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kuruŋ, whence Indonesian kurung (“cage”), Tagalog kulong (“caged”). Schuessler believes these are also ultimately from Austroasiatic.
