hedge at leastone hundred and twenty feet high, andthe trees so lofty that I could make nocomputation of their altitude. I was endeavoring to find some gapin the hedge, when I discovered one ofthe inhabitants in the next field ad-vancing toward the stile, of the samesize with him whom I saw in the seapursuing our boat. He appeared as tallas an ordinary spire-steeple, and took about tenyards at every stride. I was struck with theutmost fear and astonishment, and ran to hidemyself in the corn, looking back into the nextfield. I heard him call in a voice many degreeslouder than a speaking-trumpet; but the noisewas so high in the air that at first I certainlythought it was thunder. Whereupon seven mon- sters like himself came toward him with reaping-hooks in their hands, each hook about the large-ness of six scythes. These people were not sowell clad as the first, whose servants or laborersthey seemed to be; for, upon some words hespoke, they went to reap the corn in the fieldwhere I lay.
