Summary
[edit]DescriptionFaraday's lodestone.png |
English: A large lodestone owned by British physicist Michael Faraday and used in his experiments. A lodestone is a naturally magnetized piece of the mineral magnetite and is a natural magnet. Before strong artificial magnets, scientists used powerful lodestones like this in experiments, attaching iron pole pieces to them to make magnets. The weight of the stone and its pole pieces is about 12 kg, and it can lift 16 kg. It originally came from Russia; the words "Siberia" and "1777" are engraved on the mounting. The stone is carved with a scene representing miners and two angels. It was photographed in the King George III collection of scientific apparatus at King's College. |
