Designed by Hobie Alter of USA in 1972, Hobie - 16 Catamaran is the most popular catamaran in the world for recreational sailing as well as for competitive sailing. The catamaran us rigged with two sails and is sailed with a helmsman and a crew who often need to hang out on a trapeze to balance the catamaran against the large force exerted by the sails, making the experience extremely thrilling. The catamaran can be launched from a beach as it does not have any protrusions extending out of its hull.

A two-hulled boat is commonly called a catamaran. The word originated from Tamil word 'kettu maran' meaning 'tied wood'.
