Second Largest Group

On "Cebuanos being the second largest ethnic group... Tagalogs outnumbered them..." What is your source and basis? It hardly seems likely that Tagalogs would suddenly experience a growth spurt. It might be that there are more people speaking Tagalog now, but that doesn't mean that the people who speak Tagalog are Tagalog in the ethnic sense. Please cite your source for reference.

Maayong adlaw! My source is the Philippine Census from 1960 - 2000.

1960 - Tagalog was 21% and Cebuano was 24%

1970 & 1975 - both Tagalog & Cebuano were at 24%

1980 - They counted differently just for this year. 30% of households (not people) were Tagalog-speaking. 24% for Tagalog.

1990 - 28% Tagalog individuals. 24% Cebuano.

1995 - 29.3% Tagalog. 23.2% Cebuano

2000 - 28.2% Tagalog. Severe undercounting for Cebuano, which was 15.5%! It is most likely 18 million, which is about 23.5% of the population.

The large increase of Tagalog is largely due to the influx of migrants to Metro Manila. And the adoption of Tagalog in other parts of the country. --Chris S. 02:27, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Hey, Chris S. That's exactly my point. The Census is obviously based on the number of people who speak Tagalog, not on the actual number of people who are Tagalog. I think there's a confusion between Tagalog-speakers and Tagalogs as an ethnic group. But I am convinced with your numbers. Thanks. Jute 05:03, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Jute. The section of the census pertains to mother tongue statistics. Meaning, they ask what is the native language of the person being counted. People who speak Tagalog as a native language are at about 21 million. On the other hand, people who speak Tagalog as a 2nd language is at over 60 million. --Chris S. 12:23, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Hello! According to the latest ethnologue (http://www.ethnologue.com/show_country.asp?name=PH), there are 20 million native speakers of Cebuano and 14.5 million native speakers of Tagalog. I would tend to believe SIL more than our government when it comes to surveys. SIL is probably more experienced in conducting and analyzing these kinds of surveys. Cite some problems with the province?

Look, I'm all for promoting our beloved island of Cebu, but this article doesn't show most of our problems as a province, such as deforestation, pollution, and drug trafficking. Anyone want to add this information on the article?

Suggestion to break up the article

I think the article is too large and unwieldy now to be just in one page. I suggest that we summarize the section and transfer them to their individual pages.

I wanted to add Cebuano literature here, but since it is too big to be included in this, I just put it in another page.

List of Cebu Cities

These two places of Cebu namely; Cacar and Bogo are not yet a City and there is no Republic act declaring that these places are City. But instead these are still a Municipality. On the other hand, Talamban also not a City but this place is still part or belongs to the jurisdiction of Cebu City which is under the rule of Mayor Thomas Osmeña, the Cebu City mayor. Can the redlinked editor please explain why s/he is removing entire paragraphs (as in this edit), using either no edit summary or simply saying "wordings"? Landmarks and the correct spelling of Cebu

The correct landmarks on Cebu are the Basilica del Santo Niño, Magellan's Cross, Lapu-Lapu shrine, Magellan shrine, Fort San Pedro in Plaza de Independencia, Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge, the Capitol Building, and the Toist chinese temple.

SM??, China towns etc. and i don't even see a china town in cebu, maybe down Gaisano Colon shopping mall, but that's about it. sorry guys, but these are not landmarks of Cebu, sorry but these are pov. It likes saying the former Cebu Plaza Hotel is a landmark. I'm familiar of the landmarks of Cebu. I also added the correct spelling of Cebú in Spanish, and Binisaya. Population of the province and of its principal island.

The article declares that the population of the province is 2,439,005 (as of 2007). On the other hand, the article declares that the province consists of Cebu Island and 167 surrounding islands, while the article Cebu Island declares that the population of the island is 3,850,989 (as of 2007). Aspects of the Philippine culture

Pls inform me why nothing is mentioned about the Delikadesa, Mano, the respect forms of the use of Ate, Kuyo, Dong and other forms. I am told that in the Philippines most live according to the saying "to know too much can be dangerous" while in almost all other countries people advocate "knowledge is power". Delikadesa, Mano etc are common traits of all Filipinos. Dong is local to cebuano speaking peoples but all other groups have an equivalent.

The saying about knowledge being dangerous is from Jose Rizal's (national hero) mother when she adviced him of the her son's reformist tendencies. Spanish authorities did execute him for his works. As to the common belief of this saying, its every man to himself.--Magsungai (talk) 19:27, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

History

I think we need to add more in the history section. It talks in length about Magellan's expedtion then virtually jumps to the American period with a single sentence.

From what I know, it probably comes from the Shrivijaya Empire, which is a Malay Hindu Empire. Here is a statement from the Shrivijaya Empire article in wikipedia.

"By the twelfth century, the kingdom included parts of Sumatra, Ceylon, the Malay Peninsula, Western Java, Sulawesi, the Moluccas, Borneo and the Philippines, most notably the Sulu Archipelago and the Visayas islands (and indeed the latter island group, as well as its population, is named after the empire). Links are fine, as long as they add to the article. Means: Adding a link to your business does not nessecarily help the article. Wikipedia isn't the Yellow Pages. If you can establish that the link adds depth, verifies the contents of the article and gives the reader a better understanding of the general topic, no problem at all. A City?

There are multiple references in the opening paragraphs to Cebu being a city. The 1st sentence claims it is "the second largest city in the Philippines," and another sentence lower down claims it is one of the most developed cities. Should the sentences be in the "Cebu City" article, not here? Everything else in this article implies it's about the whole island. The Luizer (talk) 23:06, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
