Michael Mann's big-screen iteration of his hit 1980s television series "Miami Vice" was up against it from the moment it was greenlit. The problem was right there in the title, and what it represented. When people who were old enough to have watched "Miami Vice" during its run from 1984 to 1990 recalled the show, they remembered a series that was Reagan-era style over substance. It was cool during a profoundly uncool era, a byproduct of empty MTV gloss bolstered by ultra-unhip music from Glenn Frey and Phil Collins. Star Don Johnson -- unshaven in a white sportcoat, rocking white Cole Haan kicks without socks -- was the epitome of the series.
The shimmering South Florida surfaces was one reason to watch, but anyone who paid actual attention to the plotlines knew going into Mann's film that the show was always about a rough, thankless, inherently deceitful job and the...

It’s been 40 years since Don Johnson exploded to stardom playing Sonny Crockett in the groundbreaking NBC hit Miami Vice. Johnson became one of the hottest actors on television in the cop drama with his terrific style and made the show iconic.

Johnson is now enjoying a new act in his life, starring in the new ABC series Doctor Odyssey. He plays Captain Robert Massey, the head of the cruise ship who puts a good face on the various weekly antics. He has had some good banter with the guests, including one played by country music star Shania Twain.

The seedy underbelly of Gotham City sits bleakly in an obsidian corner of its universe. Tucked within those corners are shadowy secrets that hide from the light that the elite pretends the city to be. Like a volcano, these shadows yearn to burst out in a society of crime and tragedy, and they’re tethered by those who’d rather see them silenced.
2022’s The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, featured an enthralling Gotham City littered with interesting characters. Jeffrey Wright’s gruff Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis’s lovable Alfred Pennyworth, Zoë Kravitz’s alluring Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman), Paul Dano’s unsettling Riddler, and of course, Robert Pattinson’s hopeful yet tortured portrayal of Bruce Wayne and Batman.

No 1970s car exudes more Hollywood allure than the Ferrari 365 Gtb/4, known colloquially as the “Daytona.” Not only was it coveted by movie stars and rock gods, but it had several memorable screen appearances itself. One played a significant role in Robert Altman’s Elliott Gould-starring ode to Film Noir, The Long Goodbye. Perhaps most famously, a convertible version starred in 1976’s A Star Is Born, with Kris Kristofferson at the wheel and Barbra Streisand in the passenger seat.
Now, just as that movie inspired an acclaimed remake a few years back, the 365 Gtb/4 is having a revival. Ferrari design head Flavio Manzoni likes to suggest that all cars from the Italian exotic automaker are of-the-moment, reflecting their time. But he has not been shy in discussing the historical inspiration for the brand’s new, $459,000 two-seater, the 12Cilindri. Manzoni has said quite clearly that the front end and overall shape echo the Daytona.

Once an indie underdog, Kevin Smith has, in middle age, devoted himself to making what critics and fans alike might characterize as glorified, self-referential home movies, cast with friends and family members and filled with callbacks, in-jokes, and the same familiar anxieties about friendship, romance, and growing up. This is not an original observation.

Don Johnson searches for the "humanity" in villains. The 74-year-old star plays antagonist Sandy Burnne in the Netflix thriller 'Rebel Ridge' and described how he tries to explore all facets of a character when playing the part of a bad guy.In an interview with Collider, Don said: "I love playing all different types of characters. I especially love playing this bad guy because this bad guy is actually a good guy."In all the bad guys I play, I find the humanity. Even bad guys, even – dare I say it – some of the most heinous people in history were human."To deny the humanity is to deny yourself. So, playing villains is a pretty exciting part of the equation. In discovering the humanity and why they do certain things that they do, it's like they were inexorably drawn on a string by their DNA to be at that place,...

It was Blue Ruin for me. Jeremy Saulnier is the real deal. The talented filmmaker has crafted a few fantastic thrillers, including Green Room and Murder Party. And now, Jeremy explores the battle between an ex-Marine (Aaron Pierre) and a small-town police department led by Chief Burrows (Don Johnson). Rebel Ridge is a stunning thriller. It is a tense new feature that smartly explores the conflict. And yes, both Johnson and Pierre are excellent here. If you have Netflix, I highly recommend checking this out beginning Friday.

It’s all about Eve on the latest episode of Miami Vice, I mean Bad Monkey.
An excellent storytelling tool is when a series, film, or whatever pokes fun at its plot.
It’s an effective way to relate to the audience and turn a lackluster part into something better than it previously was.
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)
The main thing to remember, though, is that the viewers should be aware of the poking, whereas with Bad Monkey, it isn’t clear if the show takes itself seriously or not.
For a series that feels like nothing is ever really happening, the writers have managed to create a thrilling and funny series that strolls through the plot like a morning walk down the beach.

Michael Mann fans got quite a nice surprise at a sold-out American Cinematheque showing of Miami Vice on Saturday when the filmmaker himself turned up to Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre.
Mann joined film writers and critics Katie Walsh and Blake Howard — co-hosts of the Miami Nice podcast that centered on the 2006 Mann feature starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell — for a lively post-screening Q&a. According to a source, multiple attendees flew in to Los Angeles for the event, and that included Howard. The host of another Mann-focused podcast, One Heat Minute, jetted in for the special screening from his home in Australia. Presented in 35mm, the screening was part of American Cinematheque’s Friends of the Fest series.

With interest in the sequel to Mann’s 1995 crime drama sky-high, the director has offered a take on where things stand right now on Heat 2.
We know that Micheal Mann’s next project is going to be Heat 2, a belated sequel to one of his most beloved films. The original Heat – a crime thriller starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer is still regarded as one of the greatest movies in the genre and as such, there’s plenty of interest in the progress of the planned follow-up.
Mann himself has already co-written (with Meg Gardiner) a novel detailing the events of the sequel, so the story details for Heat 2 are already out in the world. We won’t spoil them here apart from to state that the book (and the subsequent film) serves as both a prequel and a sequel to the original Heat.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Pegasus", Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is reunited with Admiral Erik Pressman (Terry O'Quinn), his former commanding officer on board a ship called the U.S.S. Pegasus. Pressman is visiting the Enterprise to reveal that Starfleet intelligence has located the missing Pegasus, presumably destroyed 15 years ago. It's their mission to either salvage the Pegasus or destroy it before nearby Romulans can cannibalize its technology.
In some meaningful asides, Riker and Pressman talk about the "final mission" of the Pegasus, and how there are some things they have been keeping secret for the last 15 years, hoping that Starfleet never finds out. Like most Admirals on "Star Trek," Pressman is up to something shady, and he had convinced a young Ensign Riker to go along with it. “Nice Girls” is a Netflix movie starring Alice Taglioni and Stéfi Celma. It is directed by Noémie Saglio.
Featuring two endearing and utterly unconventional girls, this film breaks away from the typical French high comedy stereotypes. Instead, it presents two police officers who neither dress in glamorous attire nor conform to expected behavior, creating humor through an unexpected, refreshing lens. The film is straightforward and charming, with the sole purpose of eliciting laughter.
About the Film
This comedy is unabashedly what it sets out to be: a comedy. Despite a backdrop involving corrupt cops, hackers, and more, “Nice Girls” finds its humor in witty dialogues and a slightly old-fashioned portrayal of characters who deftly navigate and subvert their own stereotypes. Imagine “Miami Vice” stripped of all its glamour, transforming its two leads into near parodies with the simple aim of providing a good time.

By 2014, digital cinematography had become ubiquitous. A bankrupted Kodak was on the verge of closing its doors, and the conversation surrounding digital technology was how it could emulate the photochemical process of shooting on celluloid (a topic still up for debate today) while promising filmmakers greater flexibility, control, and ease of use.
Only a decade earlier, tech companies were still a few years away from building a professional camera designed for Hollywood movie production. There had been independent films shot with inexpensive prosumer Dv cameras that were blown up to 35mm film stock, and George Lucas leaned on Sony to accelerate the development of a camera he could utilize for the next stage of his CGI world-building in “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” (2002), but studio filmmakers and the studios...

Wassup and welcome to IndieWire’s 2000’s Week, our annual summer-time celebration of whichever decade we’re thinking on most fondly this particular season. As we’ve previously done with both the ’80s (rad) and the ’90s (the shiznit), we’re spending this stretch of the dog days of summer looking back on some recent history. Some very recent history, in this case.
Like those previous iterations, this celebration of the best of the early aughts’ cinematic output will kick off with our ranked mega-list of the decade’s 100 greatest films, which we will then follow with interviews with the people who made them, essays about the impact these contemporary classics had on the world at large, close listens of the scores and needle-drops that still reverberate in our ears, and so very much more.
As we’re fond of saying around these parts, if you’re worried about the...

It might be time to put some movie nights on the calendar to ensure you catch everything departing from Netflix this August before they’re gone for good.
Unfortunately, in order to make room for the new content hitting the platform this month, it’s time to say goodbye to some of the old. From “Dumb and Dumber To” to the original “Spider-Man,” the family favorites category is taking some tough losses.
The 2022 film that took home seven Oscars (including Best Picture), “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” is making its departure after five months on the streaming platform. Another award-winning film headed out the Netflix doors is “American Hustle.” Some other big upsets this month are “The Blind Side” and the original “Paddington.”

In the early 2000s, director Michael Mann was coming off four hugely ambitious films — “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Heat,” “The Insider,” and “Ali” — and thinking about what to do next. He spent over a year working with John Logan on a Howard Hughes script that Martin Scorsese would ultimately direct as “The Aviator,” but its similarities to “Ali” made him wary of embarking on another epic.
“It was an internal conflict,” Mann said on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “In Ali’s case, it was about Ali determining his identity. ‘Who shall I be? Who shall I represent to the world?’ The quest he’s on is very similar to the Howard Hughes story.”
Luckily, another script came Mann’s way that was not only different from “Ali” but also from anything he’d done before. Stuart Beattie’s “Collateral” had the kind of intense conflict, rich characters, and...

Throwback To Star Trek: 3 Actors Who Almost Took On Riker’s Role In Star Trek Before Jonathan Frakes
3 different actors had the chance to portray Riker in Star Trek(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Let’s go back in time and investigate the possible outcomes inside the Star Trek world. Who knows, perhaps the series might have gone entirely in a different path if another actor had played Riker!
1. Michael O’Gorman: The Almost-Riker Who Quit Acting
Think of a Star Trek where Michael O’Gorman, not Jonathan Frakes, served as Riker’s face. It’s an idea worth considering. O’Gorman has a limited background in acting, having played quirky characters in a number of forgotten syndicated series, including Monsters and Miami Vice. Despite his short list of credits, O’Gorman was a serious contender for Riker.
In a memo dated April 13, 1987, from John Ferraro, Senior Vice President for Paramount Pictures, O’Gorman’s name appeared alongside other top contenders such as Gregg Marx and Ben Murphy. Ferraro’s memo...

Mr. 305 is putting his money where his mouth is.
Miami native and outspoken local booster Pitbull made a deal Tuesday to put his name on the 20,000-seat stadium at Florida International University.
Billed as the “world’s first-ever athletics venue with an artist possessing the naming rights,” the deal pays Fiu $6 million over what’s being widely reported at five years. A statement from the school, however, says the term is 10 years.
“This partnership with Fiu is a true honor and a testament to what we can achieve when we work hard,” said Pitbull (née Armando Christian Perez). “Renaming the stadium isn’t just about a name change. It’s about inspiring the community, creating opportunities and showing the world that with determination and a clear vision, anything is possible. We’re making history together, and we’re just getting started. Why dream when you can live it?”

On Sept. 16, 1984, the Anthony Yerkovich-created series Miami Vice premiered on NBC and went on to revolutionize television with its ultra-stylized visuals, cutting-edge MTV-era music and unconventional fashion highlighting the riveting weekly adventures of hard-bitten undercover detectives. “The ambition of the show was to break the form of everything that had come before,” the series’ executive producer Michael Mann tells THR.
In the Casablanca of ’80s Miami, boat-dwelling Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and suave New Yorker Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) drove luxury cars, averted explosions and busted drug lords in bold and unexpected designer outfits. Crockett’s jacket-over-t-shirt signature triggered a paradigm shift in the traditional concept of menswear, which endures 40 years later. “It changed the way men dressed in the world,” says Emmy-nominated season one costume designer Jodie Tillen. “It gave men permission to wear pastels.”
Today, its slouchy silhouettes and soft colors are heavily influencing men on the red carpet.

Joshua Jackson is strategically shirtless in the first clip for his upcoming ABC series “Doctor Odyssey” from producers Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken.
As cruise ship doctor Max, it’s his character’s job to save lives… and to hit the pool every now and then, as we see in the clip shared to social media on Thursday. The 15-second teaser is scored to Latto’s 2022 hit “Big Energy” and was posted to Instagram with the cheeky caption, “Big Deck Energy.”
Here’s the ABC logline: “Max is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”
A tuxedo-clad Don Johnson of “Miami Vice” and “Knives Out” costars as, we’re guessing, the man with the purse strings. In the preview, he tells Max, “This ship is heaven. Doctor, it...

How ‘Dìdi’ Star Joan Chen Channeled the Toughest Parts of Motherhood for Her Deepest Performance Yet
Sean Wang’s “Dìdi” hits where it hurts for any millennial who came of age in middle school in 2008 — on MySpace and AOL Instant Messenger and in the throes of puberty. But it’s especially hard-hitting for Taiwanese-Americans raised in the California Bay Area at the time, as Fremont-hailing writer/director Wang’s big Sundance winner (including an Audience Award) is based on his own youth — one where he was often recalcitrant toward his single mom.
In this frank and affecting dramedy, young actor Izaac Wang plays Chris, a 13-year-old spending the summer before his freshman year of high school surfing the web and making YouTube videos with his pals. Until he falls in with an older crowd he seeks to impress. In the seemingly endless summer between eighth and ninth grade, there’s a crush, too, he’s trying to woo — with embarrassingly dismal results. Back at home, the...

Summer is far from over, but Netflix fans hoping to plan their next summer movie night should be aware that several excellent movies are leaving the streamer in August 2024. Among them are an Oscar Best Picture winner, a new family-friendly classic, an ambitious historical epic, a clever teen comedy, and a trilogy that brought superhero fever to the big screen before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was so much as a twinkle in Kevin Feige's eye.
Along with the great films listed below, Netflix will also soon say goodbye to several other memorable titles, including the endearing stop-motion movie "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On," the star-studded Coen Brothers caper "Burn After Reading," stoner comedy "Pineapple Express," Jim Carrey favorite "Liar Liar," and recent Film Twitter main character "Miami Vice". While several of these films will no doubt land on other streamers, there are so many subscription services these days...

Michael Mann, the iconoclastic director of "Heat," "The Last of the Mohicans," and "Miami Vice," may have just changed the game when it comes to home video special features.
Today, Mann launched the Michael Mann Archives, which is described as "a state-of-the-art, interactive website offering unique access into the all-encompassing directing process of one of cinema's most influential filmmakers." The first film to be featured is Mann's passion project, "Ferrari," which he spent decades developing before it was finally released in 2023.
For $65 (plus something called a "gas fee" that's present with each transaction since it involves the use of blockchain technology), which must be paid only to the website at michaelmannarchives.com, fans will receive a unique access pass that will let them "enter and explore the Archive's extensive collection at their own pace and in perpetuity." Presumably, there will eventually be sections of the Archives devoted to Mann's other movies,...

Michael Mann has followed in the footsteps of Martin Scorsese and joined Letterboxd, the social media site that allows cinephiles to log and rate the movies they’ve seen. The “Miami Vice” director quietly made an account and posted his first list, which is titled “14 Favorite Films in no particular order (except Potemkin).” After singling out Sergei Eisenstein’s landmark silent epic “Battleship Potemkin” as his favorite film of all time, he highlighted 13 other films ranging from classic film noir and New Hollywood masterpieces to recent hits like “The Hurt Locker” and “Poor Things.” Mann’s 14 favorite films can be found below.

For a certain type of film nerd (and lord knows I’m one), Michael Mann is a god. The man (Mann!) has directed some of the most potent, ultra-macho dramas and crime thrillers of the last forty-plus years, including a whole laundry list of classics, including Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and many more. Plus, he’s the guy behind one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Miami Vice, and its underrated 2006 big-screen remake (to which we recently paid tribute). His influence can be felt in everything from Sam Levinson’s Euphoria to, shockingly enough, the films of Wes Anderson.
And now, Mann has joined the Mecca of film worship, Letterboxd, opening an account that includes a list of fourteen of his favourite movies. The selection is quite eclectic, including works from Sergei Eisenstein to Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Denis Villeneuve,...

On September 16, 1984, a little TV show named Miami Vice hit cable and was a huge success for NBC. It was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by an up-and-coming filmmaker named Michael Mann. The show would become iconic for its stylish depiction of the Miami drug scene, its use of contemporary music and its distinctive fashion. Years later, in 2006, a movie that has gone down as very divisive would be made. It’s a movie that defines what it means to be revisited. So today, let’s check out Michael Mann’s film adaptation of Miami Vice.
As stated earlier, Michael Mann helped create the captivating TV show. During the 1980s and 90s, Michael would go on to make some of the greatest films of the era, including Heat (which is getting a sequel soon), The Insider, The Last of the Mohicans, and Manhunter. There are plenty of great Clint Eastwood movie moments in "Escape from Alcatraz," but it's not just the veteran star that made this a legendary prison break thriller. Directed by Don Siegel, the film was an adaptation of J. Campbell Bruce's 1963 non-fiction book of the same name, which chronicled the real-life June 1962 Alcatraz escape attempt. "Escape" also marked the fifth and final collaboration between the Siegel and Eastwood, and it's a fitting end to their fruitful working relationship. Still regarded as one of the finest films of the 1970s, "Escape" was met with widespread critical acclaim upon its 1979 release and its reputation hasn't faltered since.
Aside from the tight direction and excellent lead performance, the film also features stellar supporting performances from the likes of Patrick McGoohan, Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau, and Larry Hankin. What's more, it marked the film debut of Danny Glover, who of course went on...

Many of the shots that open American Gigolo are angled far above high-price escort Julian Kay (Richard Gere) as he goes about his date. The bird’s-eye view on him captures the materialistic glamor in which he walks—designer clothes, a Mercedes convertible—while also placing it at enough of a distance to remove any identification or pleasure on our part. All at once, Julian is defined both as a man who delights in consumer culture while being a product himself, a person who’s constantly using himself as a model for the very things he buys.
Writer-director Paul Schrader routinely emphasizes this detachment in further sketching out the details of Julian’s life and demeanor. The man lives in a spacious apartment with modern decor, but the ample negative space of the flat stresses how it feels less like a home and more like a showroom for a lifestyle.

Patrick Stewart and the Star Trek franchise are not too far from each other. He played the character of Jean Luc Picard for seven long seasons in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994. Stewart then went on to feature in four more movies, and recently we also saw him return to the beloved role in the series, Star Trek: Picard, which ran for three more seasons from 2020 to 2023.

But it would come as a shock to many Star Trek enthusiasts to know that Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek universe did not want Patrick Stewart to play the role of Captain Picard in Tng. And as for Stewart, when he joined the show, he did not think the show would even last the first season. He was just taking a chance to “make some money” and “get a suntan.

Bradley Cooper is one of the most accomplished actors working in Hollywood right now. While he gained fame for his comedies such as The Hangover series, he graduated to dramatic roles with films like American Sniper and Silver Linings Playbook. He even turned director with the musical romance A Star Is Born and last year’s Maestro.
Cooper opened up about his struggles as an up-and-coming actor in the business. He mentioned that he had once auditioned for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. The actor emotionally recounted how despite not getting the role, he cherished the letter that Mann sent him after his rejection which he has preserved to this day.

Buckle up because the Summer movie season kicks into high gear with a brand-new installment of a big loud action franchise. This one goes back 29 years, so it’s a few decades behind the recent Furiosa which is the latest entry of a series that’s now 45 years old. Oddly this weekend’s big release marks only four years since the previous, the shortest turn-around time of the four. Yes, this makes for a quartet centered around a buddy-cop duo that’s well into middle age but still embraces a youthful moniker in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die.
As this adventure begins, detectives Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are racking up the moving violations as they speed through the sun-baked streets of Miami. But they’re not in pursuit of a “perp”. No, it’s Mike’s wedding day, to his beautiful physical therapist Christine (Melanie Liburd...

Tom Bower, the veteran character actor best known for prominent turns on The Waltons and in Die Hard 2, has died. A family member confirmed the news to Deadline’s sister publication The Hollywood Reporter. He was 86.
Bower never had what one might call a “breakout” part, but he was an actor one recognized from, well, everywhere. His more than 180 screen credits include appearances on The Rockford Files, Lou Grant, Quincy M.E., Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Law & Order and many other TV staples of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s.
And he kept on working. In the past 15 years, Bower was on Ray Donovan, Bosch, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, The Office and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He also played the father of Bob Odenkirk’s character on Lucky Hank and had a part in Vince Gilligan’s El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie.
