The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’ve passed the five year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Now, World of Reel has shared a rumor that Blade might finally be on track to production, with a script in place that everyone is satisfied with and a potential new director: Jeymes Samuel, a.k.a. The Bullitts, who previously directed the Netflix Western The Harder They Fall and the Biblical dramedy The Book of Clarence. Samuel has been developing an adaptation of...

Deadline brings word today that Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Stephan James (Beacon 23) are the current frontrunners to play John Stewart in DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns.
Kyle Chandler was cast as Hal Jordan earlier this week and, according to the trade, no offers have been made yet. As we reported earlier today, F1 star Damson Idris was in the running but that no longer appears to be the case.
Both actors would bring a lot of this series and the wider Dcu and, as of now, it appears the plan is for John to be this shared world's main Green Lantern. Chandler has reportedly only signed a deal for Lanterns and no features so likely won't appear beyond the series.
Pierre is no stranger to the DC Universe after playing Dev-Em in Krypton and recently became a fan favourite choice to play John after starring in Rebel Ridge.

Earlier this week, Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights entered negotiations to star as Hal Jordan in the HBO series Lanterns, inspired by DC Comics’ Green Lantern characters. Now Deadline reports that Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Stephan James (Homecoming) have emerged as the top choices to play Jordan’s fellow Green Lantern John Stewart. Snowfall‘s Damson Idris was apparently in the mix at one point as well, but it looks like the conversation has come down to Pierre or James. Deadline’s sources caution that no offers have made to either one of them… yet.
Lanterns has officially been given an eight-episode straight-to-series order by HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios. With Kyle Chandler now officially set to play the Dcu's Hal Jordan in Lanterns, comic book fans are eager to learn who will join him in the HBO series as John Stewart.
A few different names have surfaced lately, but scooper @MyTimeToShineH - who was the first to share news of Matthias Schoenaerts' Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow casting - has now revealed a supposed shortlist.
Apparently, the five top contenders are Damson Idris (F1), Aaron Pierre (Mufasa: The Lion King), Sope Dirisu (Slow Horses), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Chevalier), and Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso). It may now be down to Idris and Pierre, though the former being cast in Children of Blood and Bone could take him out of the running.

Marvel’s troubled Blade reboot – which has been in limbo for years now – may finally have a script, a director and a shoot date.
While Marvel Studios is having a fair old crack at pulling itself out of the creative and commercial malaise that has set in over the last couple of years, one project that keeps dominating the headlines and reminding us of the studio’s rocky fortunes is Blade, the announced title that will feature Mahershala Ali as the MCU’s premier vampire hunter.
Blade’s path to production has been something of a mess, with the project already burning through two directors (Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange) and around six writers, including Michael Green, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Beau DeMayo and Nic Pizzolatto. Getting that many writers to take a crack at a script isn’t that unusual, but having so much of this process played out...

Lanterns: Multiple Actors Passed on Hal Jordan Because of Franchise’s ‘Baggage’ - Main Image
Josh Brolin was making the rounds a few weeks ago because it was said that he was being eyed for the role of an older Green Lantern Hal Jordan, and though he ultimately passed, other actors like Chris Pine and Timothy Olyphant were said to be eyed for the role.

Green Lantern has had a rough history on film. In 2011, Warner Bros. bet on the hero being their Iron Man; a B-lister underdog who could kick off a blockbuster franchise. "Green Lantern" starring Ryan Reynolds did not fly high so the character was almost completely absent from the DC Extended Universe. (None of the major Green Lanterns show up in either cut of "Justice League.")
Now, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios is again looking to make the Green Lantern Corps an early fixture of their DC Films. Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner in 2025's "Superman" and a "Lanterns" TV series is currently in development at HBO. A "True Detective" style murder mystery, "Lanterns" will star the two most famous comic Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart (not the one from "The Daily Show").

Earlier this week, the somewhat surprising news that Kyle Chandler is in talks to play veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO Lanterns series broke, and we may now know one of the actors in contention to join him as the younger, inexperienced hero he takes under his wing.
According to Mttsh, Damson Idris (33) is one of five actors being looked at for the role of John Stewart.
Idris is an up-and-coming British actor, best-known for playing the lead in John Singleton's crime drama, Snowfall, which debuted on FX in 2017 and ended in 2023 after six seasons. He also played the co-lead in Netflix's 2021 sci-fi action film, Outside the Wire.

[This story contains spoilers for Rebel Ridge.]
Rebel Ridge star AnnaSophia Robb is keenly aware that no one could write a more storybook ending to the behind-the scenes saga of Jeremy Saulnier’s latest critically acclaimed film.
The thriller, which required multiple attempts at completing principal photography before finally wrapping in 2022, has reigned atop Netflix’s top ten and various other streaming originals charts in the two-and-a-half weeks it’s been available to stream. The pic chronicles Aaron Pierre’s Terry Richmond and Robb’s Summer McBride as they risk life and limb to put a stop to a corrupt small-town police department in Louisiana.
After the film’s scheduled production was shut down by the pandemic in 2020, Robb joined the cast ahead of 2021’s spring shoot, replacing another actor in the process. A month into filming, former lead actor, John Boyega, abruptly left the project due to “family reasons,” putting the mid-budget film in a precarious situation.

Can’t get enough of “Rebel Ridge”? You’re certainly not alone. Jeremy Saulnier’s Netflix hit has soared up the streaming charts, thanks to Saulnier’s tight script, toothsome filmmaking and one star-making performance from Aaron Pierre. But all the qualities that make it so special also make it hard to find more movies that will scratch the same itch.
For one thing, it’s distressingly difficult to find action movies (that aren’t Batman or Spider-Man) where the hero makes an active effort not to kill people. But “Rebel Ridge” also treads in unique cinematic waters, a hybrid neo-western legal conspiracy thriller by way of payback actioner that seamlessly blends vintage sensibilities with modern techniques and is led by just about the coolest movie character of the decade. There’s nothing quite like it, but if you’re looking for more movies like “Rebel Ridge,” here’s a...

Netflix’s Rebel Ridge seems to have won audiences over with its visceral action and amazing performances from lead actors Aaron Pierre and Don Johnson. Pierre seems to have won over critics and fans alike with his restrained work as a former Marine officer entering a new town, where corruption is rampant.
The actor’s performance seems to have propelled him to a new level of stardom. Pierre’s work in Rebel Ridge may just have made him a top contender for many upcoming action flicks, including a remake of A Fistful of Dollars. The remake of the classic that put Clint Eastwood on the map is currently in development.

It didn’t feel as though Rebel Ridge had a ton of buzz leading up to its premiere on Netflix, but Jeremy Saulnier’s action thriller is making up for that in a big way. For the second week in a row, Rebel Ridge is dominating Netflix’s Top 10 list, with 38.6 million views. Its closest competitor, the sci-fi movie Uglies, is lagging behind with 20.8 million views

Renowned author Stephen King has praised the Netflix action thriller “Rebel Ridge” on social media. King called the film “one of the best” original movies on the streaming service.
Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, “Rebel Ridge” follows Terry Richmond, a former Marine embroiled in a conflict with corrupt local authorities. Aaron Pierre stars as Richmond, who aims to expose wrongdoing without using violence.
“Rebel Ridge” has attracted widespread attention since its release. On Netflix’s viewing chart, the movie has maintained the top spot for over a week. According to King, the film presents “a thinking man’s approach” to the action genre.
Though production faced challenges, Saulnier remained dedicated to the project. When lead actor John Boyega left for personal reasons, Saulnier took control of all aspects to complete the film. Critics note Saulnier skillfully addresses issues like racial injustice and policing through Richmond’s restraint.

Throughout film history, there have been companies and, for certain stretches, whole studios notorious for churning out garbage. Obviously, American International Pictures had a rep for schlock, but they hit for a shockingly high average at their late 1950s and '60s peak. There's also Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus' Cannon Films, which sparkled with its constellation of B-list action stars like Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson, but Golan was a filmmaker himself with dreams of respectability who courted legit directors like Franco Zeffirelli, Jerry Schatzberg, and Andrei Konchalovsky to make Academy Awards-worthy movies for his exploitation factory.

Netflix’s latest action thriller Rebel Ridge has received positive reviews all around. The Aaron Pierre and Don Johnson starrer has been appreciated for its sensitive subject matter and visceral action sequences. The film received a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been getting rave reviews.
Filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier recently detailed how he conceived the innovative action sequences in the film. Preferring to keep the action real instead of over-the-top choreography, Saulnier reportedly pushed against polished sequences to capture the awkwardness of real-life fighting.

The action thriller Rebel Ridge is not director Jeremy Saulnier’s first action rodeo. The filmmaker is possibly best known for the slasher film Green Room and the revenge thriller Blue Ruin. He is known for his gory action set-pieces which lean towards the horror genre than adrenaline-pumping action.

“Rebel Ridge” is the #1 movie on Netflix right now.
In its first week of release the movie, which stars Aaron Pierre as a former Marine who heads to a small town to post bail for his cousin and finds himself in an increasingly labyrinthine conspiracy, amassed a whopping 31.2 million views (according to Netflix). It also won killer reviews, including our own review, which described the movie as “exciting, engaging, stimulating entertainment.” Plus, every cool kid you follow on Letterboxd is watching, rating and talking about it. Just look.
And this kind of universal acceptance and acclaim would be a feat for any movie, really, but it seems like even more of an accomplishment given the journey that “Rebel Ridge” has been on. This is a movie whose production weathered a Covid-19 shutdown, an abrupt change in the movie’s main cast and a prolonged post-production process.

James Earl Jones’ iconic voice was among his many gifts as a performer. With the actor having died this week at 93, it remains to be seen whether that voice could appear in new projects, particularly from the Star Wars franchise.
One of Jones’ signature roles was providing the voice of Darth Vader, which he originated in 1977’s Star Wars and continued throughout the initial trilogy before reprising the character in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Although Jones was not involved in the 2022 Disney+ series Obi Wan-Kenobi, his voice was used, with Skywalker Sound editor Matthew Wood telling Vanity Fair at the time that the actor had quietly retired from the role but signed over rights to his archival voice work.

Netflix's Rebel Ridge introduced an interesting acronym called McMap that has strong ties to Aaron Pierre's protagonist.
The new action thriller focuses on Terry Richmond (Pierre), an ex-marine looking to stay out of trouble. His world drastically changes after corrupt cops from Shelby Springs prevent him from posting bail for his cousin, Mike.
As he becomes entangled in the corrupt system of the local town, he utilizes his past to break free, and the McMap acronym serves as an important tool in driving the narrative forward.

Early in his acting career, Aaron Pierre heard he was too tall to ever convincingly convey emotion onscreen. The passing remark stayed with Pierre, who, standing at 6 foot, 3 inches, has spent much of his career disproving that notion with memorable characters on stage and screen.
After starting out in London theater, Pierre broke out as an enslaved man fighting for freedom in Barry Jenkins’ historical limited series “The Underground Railroad” and as a rapper cheekily named “Mid-Sized Sedan” in M. Night Shyamalan’s existential horror film “Old.” But this year marks a new career-high for the 30-year-old English performer, who became the latest actor to reexamine the legacy of Malcolm X in the fourth season of National Geographic’s anthology series “Genius” and will debut as the rich baritone voice of Mufasa in Jenkins’ new “Lion King” prequel this December.

It appears The Deliverance is picking up steam on Netflix, putting up 21.8M views from September 2 to 8, marking a significant increase from the week prior.
The film has taken a minute to break through with audiences since premiering on August 16, but after marching its way to third place in the last week of the month, it took the second place spot during this interval.
The top title of the week went to Rebel Ridge, which amassed 31.2M views. The thriller, which stars Aaron Pierre, dropped on Netflix on September 6, making this quite an impressive three-day debut. The film has the potential to put up an even bigger audience this week, as it’ll be its first full seven days of availability, which generally works in a title’s favor.
And, of course, The Perfect Couple also tallied its fair share of views on the TV side of things with 20.3M after launching on Thursday.

My first tryst with Jeremy Saulnier was the 2015 punk vs. nazi thriller Green Room. I had no idea what I was walking into. But the barn burner of a movie, where late Anton Yelchin delivered one hell of a performance, and Sir Patrick Stewart played a very against-type Nazi cult leader, did more than enough for me to check out the director’s other work. So I immediately jumped onto Blue Ruin, Saulnier’s previous film, where he gave a whole new spin to the usual revenge drama genre. It was as anxiety-inducing as Green Room, but much more methodical and subdued in approach. Both films, however, managed to put the name of Jeremy Saulnier in my semi-pro-level cinema enthusiast head. But I eventually moved on. Saulnier did come back to the scene with Hold the Dark, arguably his biggest film, boasting of a stellar cast and the backing of Netflix,...

Maybe there’s hope for quality Netflix originals apart from its awards contenders. “Rebel Ridge,” a topical thriller about an ex-Marine confronting a corrupt small-town sheriff, is #1 at Netflix. It stars Aaron Pierre — who stepped into the role after John Boyega walked off the production in June 2021. A respected actor and ascendant star, Pierre is not a household name like Mark Wahlberg or Adam Sandler or Eddie Murphy, all of whom recently took Netflix originals to #1.
Nor is it a flashy drama, or a big-budget production. Its director, Jeremy Saulnier, most recently directed “Hold the Dark” for Netflix in 2018 (along with a couple of episodes of “True Detective”). IndieWire has watched his career for years, but directors like these also have wound up at Netflix making films that lack edginess or creativity. This seems like a happy exception.
