In today’s troubled political times, “The West Wing” feels even more quaint and nostalgic than it did when it premiered 25 years ago, which means we need it now more than ever. An idealized vision of a Presidential administration functioning at its very best despite Washington’s many complications, the Aaron Sorkin-created series captivated audiences with its whip-smart dialogue and dense storytelling. In honor of its 25th anniversary, let’s take a look back at 20 of its greatest episodes, ranked worst to best.
“The West Wing” centered on the ins and outs of a White House staff, with Martin Sheen front and center as the noble, dedicated President Jed Bartlet. There’s Chief of Staff Leo McGarry (John Spencer), Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Communications Director Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Press Secretary C.J. When you think of shows that define teen drama, One Tree Hill is at the very top of the list. The beloved CW series had everything a young audience looks for: from messy love triangles to half-brother angst. When it made the jump to take its characters from high school to their adult years between seasons 4 and 5, however, the show reached a whole new and exciting level.
It’s extremely difficult to do a successful time jump, especially when it comes to the YA genre. If it’s done incorrectly, it can ruin the entire show as well as its characters, losing fans in the process as they long for what the show once was. One Tree Hill managed to use its time jump to not only elevate the storylines but breathe new life into its beloved group of characters after graduation.

Source Image: Amazon Although it wasn’t a huge hit upon its initial release, The Cutting Edge has endured for more than three decades as a cult classic. The movie, about a figure skater and a hockey player who team up to achieve an Olympic dream, featured D. B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly as the pair who build both a working and romantic relationship over time. As Sweeney told us when the film was released, the skating in the film was real, and it was a real challenge for him to learn, especially the figure skating. (Click on the media bar below to hear D. For thirty years, the kingdom of Pride Rock has entertained and amazed audiences young and old with tales of growth, courage, responsibility, and, of course, family. What began as a small idea has become one of Disney’s most recognizable properties worldwide, with multiple films, television shows, video games, and even stage musicals.
The story famously borrows heavily from Shakespeare, specifically from the tragedy Hamlet, but other biblical stories, such as Joseph and Moses, were also very influential.
The story focuses on Simba (Johnathan Taylor Thomas), a lion cub meant to be the next king of the Pride Lands after his father Mufasa’s (James Earl Jones) reign. Mufasa’s brother Scar (Jeremy Irons) wants the throne for himself and stages Mufasa’s death, making Simba believe he was responsible.

Before starring on One Tree Hill for nine seasons, star James Lafferty says he was close to walking away from acting.
In an interview with People published Friday, the actor reflected on spending his childhood in the “acting game” that eventually led to the Oth opportunity. “I started when I was really young and I was auditioning by the time I was 10 and working my way up through smaller roles to get the opportunity to do something like this,” Lafferty said.
While visiting the Warner Bros. offices, Lafferty recalled seeing photos of the cast of Dawson’s Creek thinking, “Oh man, it’d be so cool to be up there someday.”
“When I got the audition for One Tree Hill — when I got the script it was originally called Ravens — and the role was a basketball player and he had an edge to him,” he recalls. “And it was just an...

Oxygen’s true-crime docuseries Real Murders of Orange County revisits one of the most shocking and disturbing murder mysteries that had the system fooled until years later.
In the upcoming episode, “Stolen Youth” Linda Marie Brown, a young mother is killed in her own bed in what seems to be a sudden crime of rage. But the true killer is shockingly revealed years later to be a twisted master of manipulation.
The murder was pinned on the young mother’s teenage stepdaughter, Cinnamon Brown. But during her trial, investigators noticed extremely bizarre behavior from the murder victim’s husband, David Brown, who sat in the courtroom. This bizarre behavior became one of many red flags in this case.

It deeply saddens me that Angelo Badalamenti, the composer behind "Blue Velvet," "Lost Highway," and "Mulholland Drive," has passed away at the age of 85. Badalamenti is to David Lynch what John Williams is to Steven Spielberg; they've each worked with other high-profile artists in their career, but their success is notably intertwined. The surrealistic temperment of Lynch's work feels oddly incomplete without Badalamenti's touch. When you start an episode of "Twin Peaks," the opening theme is the first thing you hear. Its soft melody, which crescendos into a triumphant upswing, makes the mountainside town feel like home.
With the diverse soundscape of Badalamenti, Lynch and series co-creator Mark Frost transported network television viewers into a mystery that was as charming as it was haunting. The series came to me at a critical point in my life, where I felt as if I were trapped in the same limbo as...

The world may seem like it's gone to hell in a handbasket these days, but one thing that's recently united society is the triumphant career revival of beloved actor Brendan Fraser, whose comeback is affectionately being hailed as "the Brenaissance."
Through the '90s and early aughts, Fraser blessed movie audiences worldwide with his magnetic onscreen presence, bringing his signature earnestness to a plethora of roles both comedic and dramatic, and cementing himself as a bonafide movie star who earned lots of money for the studios. However, after a series of unfortunate events, Fraser sadly dropped off Hollywood's A-list, and his career went painfully quiet. Thankfully, he's now back in full movie-star swing with his forthcoming critically-acclaimed turn in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." Fraser also recently appeared in Steven Soderbergh's "No Sudden Move" and can be seen next year in Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

What will you be watching this Thanksgiving?
Why not dive headfirst into Christmas?
There's another Hallmark movie celebrating family that appears to be delightful.
One of the best things about entertainment is how you can explore different cultures, and My Southern Family Christmas takes us down to the Bayou for a very special celebration.
Jaicy Elliot and Ryan Rottman star alongside Brian McNamara, Moira Kelly, and Bruce Campbell (in a Hallmark movie?!).
Under the guise of a journalist writing a story about a tight-knit community that makes Christmas special, Campbell (Elliot) has a chance to get to know her biological father, Everett (Campbell), for the first time – without him ever knowing who she really is.
As she spends time with him and his family, as well as Jackson (Rottman), the town’s record keeper, she realizes that families are messy, wonderful things.

David Lynch is a director who has always, in a way, been ahead of the curve. His vision throughout both his film and television projects is uncompromising, and even those that had received mixed reception during their release are often warmly regarded today (at least by Lynch fans).
Perhaps the most drastically re-evaluated Lynch film is "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me." The prequel film to his and Mark Frost's seminal series "Twin Peaks" was a critical and commercial flop upon release, with many criticizing its drastic tonal shift and bizarre imagery. What many people didn't realize at the time, however, is that "Fire Walk With Me" was perhaps the best example of Lynch's creative influences in action. The crumbling American Dream, the dissolution of the nuclear family, and the overall absurdity of societal pressures all play integral parts in this prequel.

Sometimes, thank you just isn't enough. After six years and more than 130 episodes as One Tree Hill's Peyton Sawyer, Hilarie Burton decided to leave the show that put her on the map due to an allegedly toxic workplace environment. And it was an industry vet who gave her the courage to do it. In the Oct. 25 episode of iHeartRadio's Drama Queens podcast, Hilarie got emotional when she recalled the support her guest and former co-star Moira Kelly had given her when it was time to decide if she should stay with the series or embark on another adventure. "Moira, this is the first time I've seen you since I left the show. I've wanted to tell you this for years and years and years, but...

There’s nothing quite like the drama (and, on occasion, trauma) of Olympic-level sports to rally even the most relaxed of audience members. When this year’s Winter Olympics — the 23rd in the contemporary iteration of the event — stages its opening ceremony this Friday in Pyeongchang, South Korea, it will herald in over two weeks of the very best that the athletic world has to offer. Even better: it’s all real.
But for those interested in cinematic renditions of stories of grit, determination, and often a metric ton of sequins, the movie world has provided a few choice picks. From the drama of such classics as “Downhill Racer” to the joy of “Cool Runnings” and the wacky happenstance of “I, Tonya,” check out eight solid gold picks for some Olympics-centric binge-watching below (if you can find the time during watching the actual events unfold in the coming weeks).

Twin Peaks actress Lara Flynn Boyle made a rare public appearance last Sunday at the La County Walk to Defeat Als where she discussed the sexual misconduct she’s had to deal with in her career.
Asked whether she had ever been mistreated in her career, Boyle told The Hollywood Reporter, “Oh, all the time! All the time! It happens all the time.”
“I looked at it on two levels: Do I want to flip burgers, or do I want to put up with someone not being appropriate with me? I chose the other side,” the 47-year-old actress continued.

Walt Disney was a canny marketer, cycling his films in and out of release, on and off television, through the years, recognizing it would appear fresh to younger viewers and fondly recalled by those at later stages in their lives. That practice has continued into the world of home video with the films on rotation and we’re now getting The Lion King: The Circle of Life Edition after having received Masterpiece Collection, Platinum Edition and Diamond Edition. The new edition is already available as Digital HD and hits disc today.
An interesting thing to consider about the story itself is that Simba is being trained by his father to one day succeed him as King. This connection with a parent and this effort towards being prepared to rule is entirely absent from any of the Disney Princess films.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's worth quoting the latest (perhaps the last?) gnomic pronouncements from Margaret "The Log Lady" Lanterman (the late Catherine E. Coulson), speaking via phone to Deputy Sheriff Tommy "Hawk" Hill (Michael Horse), in full: "Hawk—electricity is humming. You hear it in the mountains and rivers. You see it dance among the seas and stars. And glowing around the moon. But in these days, the glow is dying. What will be in the darkness that remains? The Truman brothers are both true men. They are your brothers. And the others, the good ones, who have been with you. Now the circle is almost complete. Watch and listen to the dream of time and space. It all comes out now, flowing like a river. That which is and is not.

There are some notable omissions from the 217 names on the cast list for Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” revival, including Heather Graham (who played Annie Blackburn) and Piper Laurie (Catherine Martell). But the most noticeable absence may be that of Lara Flynn Boyle. Boyle played the good-hearted best friend of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). And while her omission from the giant cast list is disappointing, it isn’t a huge surprise. Boyle was famously recast in the “Twin Peaks” prequel film “Fire Walk With Me” — in which the role of Donna was played by Moira Kelly, who is also not appearing in the revival,...

Is one of the world’s biggest pop stars set to lend her vocals to the upcoming remake of The Lion King? If Disney gets their wish it looks very likely as news from Variety suggests Beyonce is the first choice to voice Nala in Jon Favreau’s new version of the classic animation.
There is no official deal just yet but the singer is director Favreau’s first choice for the role, which would see her take over the role from Moira Kelly and Sally Dworsky, who voiced and sung in the 1994 film. If she takes the role, she would join Donald Glover (Han Solo), who voices Simba, and James Earl Jones who returns to play Mufasa.

On March 27, 1992, Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney heated up the ice rink on the big screen as mismatched Olympians Kate Moseley and Doug Dorsey in The Cutting Edge.
Moseley — a rich, stuck-up figure skater — is paired up with working-class former hockey player Dorsey after an injury derails his NHL dreams. They instantly clash. (Among other barbs, she asks him if he can read, tells him "don't quit your day job" and asks their coach if they can "teach it to breathe with its mouth closed.") But as the duo work together and advance to the Olympics,...

The Summer Olympics are under way, and so it’s the perfect time to look back at some of our favourite films about this magnificent sporting event.
These five films captured the heart of the Olympics in one way or another, whether it was through the perseverance of an underdog, or the nature of competition that can drive some to madness. Some are based on true stories and others are inspired simply by all of the excitement that the Olympics entail. All in all, it makes for some epic cinema.

What a way to start off the week! The formidable cast list for Showtime's forthcoming Twin Peaks revival series was revealed this morning, and man, is it a doozy. In addition to boasting such key returning players as Kyle MacLachlan (Dale Cooper), Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer/Maddy Ferguson) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne), there are a number of surprising A-listers in the mix including Michael Cera, Trent Reznor, Amanda Seyfried and Naomi Watts. On the downside, a not-insignificant number of cast members from both the original series and the 1992 prequel film Fire Walk with Me are completely absent from the list. Where, for instance, is Lara Flynn Boyle (or Moira Kelly, for that matter)? Michael Ontkean? Piper Laurie? Joan Chen? Anyone from the mill? (Literally, there is no one from the mill.) So while I'm thankful that most of the major players are back in action, I can't help but...

Twenty-five years ago this week, Americans got their first glimpse of the small Northwestern town of Twin Peaks. They heard the chords of that theme song for the first time, and they had just begun to wonder, "Who killed Laura Palmer?"
The anniversary seems especially meaningful today because those same fans are wondering what will become of Showtime's planned Twin Peaks revival. On Sunday, series creator and surrealism purveyor David Lynch announced on Facebook that he had chosen not to direct the new Twin Peaks as a result of payment disputes. However, he cautioned that "Twin Peaks may still be alive on Showtime.

The final episode of Twin Peaks aired on June 10, 1991 — and the devastating (and let’s just say it: wholly disappointing) cliffhanger left us with far too many questions. (And far too few of those questions were answered by the 1992 prequel movie Fire Walk With Me).

Some Spoilers For ‘Twin Peaks’ & ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ Contained
Everyone has their white whale; that elusive treasure or goal that they fetishise and dare to find and covet. For some it was the lost footage from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. For others it was the mythical buried reels of The Wicker Man, which rather ludicrously had been rumoured for years to be buried in the concrete foundations of an English motorway. For me it was always the deleted scenes of David Lynch’s much maligned Twin Peaks prequel Fire Walk with Me. Even in a pre-internet, pre-dvd extras age, I obsessed over this rumoured material and what possible insights it may offer into Lynch’s labyrinthian mystery. And now, thanks to the Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery Blu-ray set, they are finally here. So how do they stack up? What do they tell us?...

TV pilot production is an inexact science. Certain characters or ideas don't quite click, so you change them, or you abandon them, and then you move on. In these days of leaner budgets, though, it's trickier to deal with the changes as thoroughly as might be ideal, which is why much of NBC's press tour session for "Constantine" was devoted to a character who now won't be in the show past the pilot. In the original version of the pilot — based on the John Constantine character from DC Comics, here played by Matt Ryan as an exorcist and "dabbler in the dark arts" — Constantine befriends Liv Aberdine, played by Lucy Griffiths, the daughter of a friend of his, and someone with her own undiscovered connection to the world of the occult. The pilot takes Lucy on an emotional journey from skeptical, to fearful, to believing devoutly in the war against evil that John is fighting,...

"Bob is real. He's been having me since I was 12... he says he wants to be in me or he'll kill me."

Since Frank Underwood became president on Netflix’s House of Cards, I’ve had this geek fantasy of him debating Josiah Bartlet, Martin Sheen’s idealistic and professorial president from The West Wing. Bartlet’s Washington, D.C., was the proverbial shining city on a hill, a place where intelligent, well-intentioned people gravitated to do the peoples’ business. Underwood’s capital is the nasty underbelly of a trough coated by man’s craven pursuit of power for power’s sake. It’s practically Kennedy’s Camelot versus Nixononian realpolitik. To paraphrase Anthony Hopkins’ Nixon in Oliver Stone’s 1995 movie, “When look at The West Wing,...

The West Wing “Pilot”
Written by Aaron Sorkin
Directed by Thomas Schlamme
Originally aired September 22nd 1999 on NBC
It’s hard to argue that The West Wing isn’t Aaron Sorkin’s most successful television show. It ran for eight seasons (five more than his second longest series), outlasting even Sorkin himself (who left after the fourth season), on network TV at a time when the bar for ratings success was much higher than it is now. It racked up 26 Emmy wins in that time, including four consecutive Outstanding Drama Series awards from 2000-2003. And it arguably represents the last great drama of the pre-Sopranos era (even though it ran concurrently with The Sopranos for most of its run). Most importantly, in terms of its success, its setting proved the perfect vehicle for Sorkin’s writing. He consistently fills his shows with smart people, extremely dedicated to their jobs, who...

In honor of the Sochi Games, PopWatch is taking a look back at a few of our favorite Winter Olympics-themed movies. First up: The Cutting Edge, the classic 1992 “hockey player meets figure skater” romantic comedy. We talked to star D.B. Sweeney — who played cocky ex-hockey star Doug Dorsey, opposite Moira Kelly’s snooty ice queen Kate Moseley — about the making of the film, the impossible physics of its climactic bounce-spin-throw (the “Pamchenko”), and its truly wretched sequels. Toe pick!
Entertainment Weekly: First of all: Do you resent people still asking you about The Cutting Edge?
D.B. Sweeney: No, it’s great.
