Illustrations by Max Hunziker (1901–1976) for Simplicius Simplicissimus (Zurich, 1945)
Max Hunziker was a Swiss painter, illustrator, and stained-glass artist. The very first issue of Graphis (1944) included a feature on his zinc etching. Some links about him: 1, 2, 3.
Hunziker created a heroic 169 original illustrations for this 1945 Swiss edition of Simplicius Simplicissimus. The colophon describes them as "zink gezeichnet und handgeatzt." From what I can gather, Hunziker briefly revived a form of zinc etching most notably used by William Blake.
While the horrors of the Thirty Years' War inspired Grimmelshausen's Simplicius Simplicissimus (written in 1668), I think it's clear the horrors of another war inspired Hunziker's version.
The style has a proto-Pushpin/proto-Topor feel to it.
