During the period since the start of the 1979-80 bushfire season, bushfire emergencies have been directly responsible for 352 deaths in Australia; 249 in Victoria, 42 in South Australia, 38 in New South Wales, 19 in Western Australia, 6 in Queensland, 4 in the Australian Capital Territory, and 3 in Tasmania.
