[edit]From ver- + dwienen, the latter from Middle Low German dwînen, Old Saxon *dwīnan, from Proto-Germanic *dwīnaną. Related to Dutch verdwijnen, West Frisian ferdwine, English dwindle, dwine, Icelandic dvína.
