[edit]From late Middle High German wurmstichic, derived from wurmstich m (“wormhole”), possibly from Middle Low German wormstēke f, m (early 14th century; compare obsolete German Wurmstiche f alongside regular Wurmstich m). Analyzable as Wurm (“worm”) + Stich (“stitch, prick”) + -ig.
