[edit]First attested as Vroelen in 1803-1820. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from a compound of vroon (“lordly”) and lo (“light forest”) or (somewhat less-likely) from a compound of dialectal vroe (“cheerful, happy”) and lo. Compare Fromberg, Vroendaal and Vroenhof.
