Etymology
[edit]Wasser (“water”) + Stoff (“substance”), calque of French hydrogène which is itself a compound modelled after Ancient Greek ὕδωρ (húdōr, “water”) + γεννάω (gennáō, “I bring forth”). Compare Dutch waterstof and Polish wodór.
