From pre-Germanic *gʰrowd-o-s, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrewd-, *gʰer- (to rub, grind, remove). Akin to Proto-Slavic *gruda (pile), Proto-Slavic *grudьnъ (crude, lousy). Synchronically analyzable as a regular o-grade adjectival formation from *greutaną (to grind, crush).[1]
