[edit]First attested as nederassel in 1301. Compound of neder (“lower, downstream”) and a compound of Old Dutch asc (“ash, Fraxinus excelsior”) and lo (“light forest”). The element neder is a late addition to distinguish the settlement from Overasselt. Compare Assel and Asselt.
