Etymology

[edit]

First attested as Ospel in 1612 and 1621. Difficult to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Potentially a compound of a variant of Middle Dutch espe (aspen, Populus tremula) and lo (light forest) or a contraction of oost (east, eastern) and peel (swamp, marsh).

See also Limburgish D'Oospel.
