[edit]First attested as dheste in 997. Etymology unknown. Of non-Germanic origins Proposed etymological relationships with does (“mossy peat, light turf, overgrown swampland”) and hees (“undergrowth, brushwood”) do not have any basis in reality. Compare Diessen, Diest and Duisburg.
