Understand
[edit]The Baixada Fluminense region is the immediate periphery of Rio de Janeiro. Its urban area sprawled along the suburban train lines and the main highways of the capital and its continuous surrounding areas. This expansion occurred more intensely along axes towards Itaguaí, in the west, Paracambi, in the northwest, and Duque de Caxias, in the north (following later towards Guapimirim, in the northeast). The region is located in the wide lowlands area to the north of the central municipality and to the south of the mountain range known as Serra do Mar, and includes the municipalities of Guapimirim, Magé, Duque de Caxias, São João de Meriti, Belford Roxo, Nilópolis, Mesquita, Nova Iguaçu, Queimados, Japeri, Paracambi, Seropédica and Itaguaí.
Get in
[edit]The major airports in the Rio de Janeiro state are Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG IATA). and Santos Dumont Airport (SDU IATA). , and the main long-distance bus station is Rodoviária Novo Rio. , so it is very likely that someone arrives in Rio's metro area through the capital city. In this case, there are lots of urban lines of several means of public transport that links directly the metropolitan core to each one of the 13 municipalities of Baixada Fluminense.
Moreover, there is also the Terminal Rodoviário de Nova Iguaçu. , a major bus station in Baixada Fluminense, and, depending on the place a visitor is coming from, he/she can arrive directly in this sub-region of the metropolitan area of Rio through it.
Get around
[edit]In Baixada Fluminense, the main urban mean of transport is the suburban train; the railway branches connect almost all municipalities of the region to Central do Brasil, in the downtown area of the capital, and have stations in many neighborhoods of Baixada - they can therefore be used for transportation within this part of the metropolitan area of Rio. Urban intercity bus and van lines departing from the thirteen municipalities of Baixada Fluminense also connect Baixada to the Central Zone of the municipality of Rio, as well as to several neighborhoods in the North and West zones of the capital. As for circulation within Baixada Fluminense, there are urban intercity bus lines connecting all municipalities in Baixada to each other, in addition to municipal lines of buses and vans.

Do
[edit]The Rio metro area still keeps more than 30% of its green territory conserved. Although a large part of this green area is located in the municipalities of Rio (the state capital city), Niterói, São Gonçalo, Itaboraí, Maricá, Tanguá, Rio Bonito and Cachoeiras de Macacu (in Leste Metropolitano), nearly a third of it is in Baixada Fluminense. The fact that a substantial part of the preserved green area of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro is distributed across the majority of the 13 municipalities of Baixada Fluminense shows the tourist potential of this part of Greater Rio in the ecological segment. Tourists can schedule and take guided tours in several of these protected areas. Two of the main protected green areas in Baixada Fluminense are the Tinguá Biological Reserve (Reserva Biológica do Tinguá), whose largest part is in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, and the Guapimirim Environmental Protection Area (Área de Proteção Ambiental de Guapimirim), at the shoreline of Guanabara Bay.
