From Ancient Greek ῡ̔οειδής (hūoeidḗs, shaped like the letter "υ") +‎ -eus (adjectival suffix), from (û, Greek letter upsilon) +‎ -ο- (-o-, -like, -oid) +‎ -ειδής (-eidḗs). Doublet of hȳoīdēs.
