From Proto-Indo-European *wókʷtlom, from the root *wekʷ- (to utter, voice).[1] Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáktram (mouth) (whence Sanskrit वक्त्र (vaktra), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬑𐬆𐬜𐬭𐬀 (vaxəδra)).
