Negro
English
editPronunciation
editNoun
editNegro (plural Negroes or Negros)
- (dated, now usually offensive) Alternative letter-case form of negro.
- 1963, Martin Luther King, Letter from a Birmingham Jail,
- Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself, and that is what has happened to the American Negro. Something within has reminded him of his birthright of freedom, and something without has reminded him that it can be gained.
- 1963, Martin Luther King, Letter from a Birmingham Jail,
Usage notes
editBy some speakers and in some contexts (chiefly historical), the capitalized form Negro is considered more respectful than the more usual negro (as in baseball's Negro Leagues). Both forms, however, are still frequently offensive to present-day speakers.
