Erzya

edit

Сув.

Etymology

edit

From Proto-Mordvinic *suv, from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *sume (fog, mist) (compare Finnish sumu, Veps sumeg, Northern Sami sopmu).[1][2]

Alternatively, but less likely, from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *sawe (smoke), in which case cognate with Finnish savu, Livonian so’v, Northern Sami suovva. Compare Erzya сувтамс (suvtams, to cense).
