Thanks for getting the article off to a good start. As far as the episodes go, do you know where to find the info regarding which episode was banned? If so, then it would probably be best to just put the specific episode number in there to avoid confusion. Thanks again. - Xaliqen 05:50, 2005 Feb 3 (UTC)

Hi McCart42,

I acted upon your request and posted a new variation of the Wikinews logo which incorporates the changes you and Mxn were asking for. Please check it out on the logo runoff vote page (it's the last entry on the page with my vote) and if it meets with your approval, please move your vote to the improved version.

Re: Music Notability

edit

Probably the best place to express your concerns about the current Notability and Music Guidelines is to post a message on its talk page. Thanks. Zzyzx11 | Talk 15:37, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Everything does not belong on wikipedia with it's own entry. Let me suggest a solution. Create a page whatever college bands and then list all of the bands on that page with a writeup. I'm thinking that would pass the test, especially if you build that page as a section on the main college page first and then split it out when it gets too large. Also, I'm not an admin so I can't delete. I'm just a simple user who can only point out problems. Latly I try to use one of the importance tags, when posible, before a VfD. It gives the writer a better chance to prove the case. Vegaswikian 16:33, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I think the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Music/Notability and Music Guidelines is getting a little too specific for that page, so I'll just give you my 2 cents directly. I think info on CWRU student bands (Minimum Requirements, Zugzwang, etc.) should be a section of the main CWRU article, with a little info on each of the bands, and none of these groups should have their own article (as they will probably be deleted quickly). Then you can have another section about other bands that have performed at Case (and maybe label that one "music scene") which can include The Clarks, JFJO, M83, etc etc and you can add Guster, Everclear, O.A.R., Nada Surf, Detachment Kit and check with U.P.B. for other non-Case groups that have performed there (including those before your time. . . . . .  ;-)) Those bands can or do have their own articles and you can wikilink to them in that section. I see you are the original creator of some of those bands' articles, and as I said, you could help "prove" their notability by expanding those articles.

I do think that a separate article on the "music scene" could be considered kind of questionable; that "scene" exists solely for the purposes of entertaining the students, especially undergrads, which is a pretty small group of people. If you're worried about making the main CWRU article "overburdened and awkward" by adding all this info, relax. Wikipedia is in a constant state of expansion, so another editor (or maybe you) can fix that by expanding the rest of the main CWRU article. Or, maybe, a group of people will think that that info just shouldn't be in there, and they'll erase it. When or if that time comes, you can discuss it on the Talk page and come to a consensus. Wikipedia articles don't have to be perfect ASAP.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Music/Notability and Music Guidelines is only a set of guidelines, not a "hard and fast" policy. Plus it's a relatively recent project that's still in a state of flux; you'll notice that the only guidelines on the main page concern bands and artists - notability guidelines for genres, songs and albums are still being worked on on the discussion page.

Also, AFAIK, the MusicWikis you mentioned are not officially connected with Wikipedia; they just use the same open source software for their creation. If anything, they may be "mirrors" of Wikipedia, which I think means they tend to pull info from here. I'm not a big computer-guy, so I could be wrong about all this. Look on the Main Page for a list of official Wikipedia sister projects.

Hope this helps, and have fun. 4.159.116.221 15:41, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC) um, above comments were from me accidentally not logged in. . . . . whoops. Soundguy99 15:45, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

CWRU bands

edit

Greetings! I'm closing the VfD for the Case Western Reserve music scene article, which was determined to delete. I see you created articles on several bands from the university, and I know these wouldn't survive if listed, if the umbrella article was deleted too. What I would suggest doing is adding a short writeup of the music scene, perhaps drawing from those articles, in the Music section of the Case Western Reserve article. Wikipedia just isn't the place for detailed articles on small college bands. I have deleted the ones that were redirects to the music scene article, and am about to list the others on VfD, where you are welcome to make the case for their notability. I hate to see your efforts wasted, but you do have time before the VfD ends to find a better place for your writeups; I believe wikicities might have what you're looking for. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 22:51, 30 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Greetings again! Truthfully, I don't know where it belongs. It seems to me that most articles of that sort end up getting merged into the article of the college where it came from; I don't see why a writeup of the music scene *wouldn't* belong as a section of the main CWRU article, but that's my personal opinion and not based on looking at previous cases. A lot of VfDs for student clubs and associations end up with the result "merge into main university article". I would personally be bold and add it, though I wouldn't create links for the bands. Try posting on the talk page of the university article to see what other interested parties think—I can only give you my opinion. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 18:14, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Inclusion not Deletion

edit

(AIW) can you take a look at Wikipedia "apartheid"? There is a movement to delete a two-word inclusion that is fact and true. It's gotten to the point that everyone is focused on the disputing editors and not the edit itself.

" Deletionists are disputing the following statement: "South Africa was settled initially by the Dutch, Germans and French from the 17th century onwards. English, other European settlers, and Diaspora Jews followed in the 19th century." This statement is true, and it therefore should not be deleted.69.217.125.53 15:10, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You wrote:

In a real election, of course, voters would show greater variation in the rankings they cast, which could influence the result. However, the result of Knoxville winning shows that in this case, a capital which is the last choice of 42% of the state's population can win; some would say that this is an undesirable result. The reason for this result is that the preferences of those who voted for Memphis are not counted beyond their first choice, because Memphis isn't elminated until the last "round". In Schulze method, another ranked choice voting method, all preferences are counted, and Nashville, a compromise city toward the geographic center of the state, would win. To voters, both methods are the same, as the ballot is identical in most ranked choice voting methods. Only the method of counting of the votes differs.

In Schulze method, and pretty much any other single-winner system, it is still quite possible that the last choice of 42% of the voters will win. --Hermitage 22:10, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Interestingly, the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) of Carnegie Mellon University uses a Condorcet method for internal elections. See Article VI Section 2 of their bylaws. Unfortunately, the GSA uses the MinMax method which I consider problematic because the MinMax method violates e.g. the Smith criterion, independence of clones, and reversal symmetry. Actually, the MinMax method even violates the majority loser criterion so that it can happen that, in a GSA election, the winner is the last choice of a majority of the voters. Actually, I'm not only not a Knoch grad, but I confess I haven't read the Goldinger book-- I imported that reference from the article on Saxonburg, Pennsylvania. The rest of the material I added was based on the External link listed at the end of the article [1], which looks to me suspiciously like a 1911 Britanica piece. Hi, please turn the fair use images on this page into a list of links instead as soon as possible. Wikipedia policy doesn't allow fair use images to be displayed in userspace (see Wikipedia:Fair use#Fair use policy), and acording to this report you have 28 of them on that page (if you have fair use images on other userspace pages please fix those too). I'm working pretty much at random off that list, so don't feel singled out if others on the list with more images have not yet been notified. Eventualy I'll get around to them all (though hopefully I'm not the only one working on it). Thanks in advance. --Sherool (talk) 02:04, 8 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

You gotta be kidding!

Indeed, it's important to distinguish between those who abuse religion for their personal agenda, and those who act in accordance with it, but the problem with Islam is that terrorists do not abuse it! They are the ones who follow the proper teachings of Islam, as derived from the example set by Muhammad. Speaking of pedophilia, Catholic priest who were accused of pedophilia did not act with accordance of the scriptures of Christianity, while pedophilia is endorsed in Islam, because Muhammad, the founder of this religion was one, and permitted it! There is one very good quote from Ali Sina stating as follows: "A good Christian can become a Mother Theresa, a good Hindu can become a Gandhi and a good Buddhist can become a Dale Lama. But a good Muslim becomes a Khomeini, an Osama Bin Laden, a Muhammad Atta. This is the difference between Islam and other religions that are equally false." I think Sina just hit the spot in this statement. I suggest you also visit [www.faithfreedom.org his site] and read Craig Winn's book Prophet of Doom -Politicallyincorrectliberal 07:50, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

If you want to learn more, please go to Ali Sina's site Faith Freedom Internatinal website and read a few articles. I recommend you start with this and this. If you have further questions, feel free to ask. Politicallyincorrectliberal 18:07, 13 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your last reply was a politically correct camel dung. The Spanish Inquisition and the Crusades were against the teachings of Christ, while modern terrorism stems from the Islamic scriptures, and influenced by the actions of Muhammad. Besides, this was a tu quoque logical fallacy on your behalf, trying to defend Islam by highlighting the bads of Christianity. There is no doctrine more poisonous, lethal and destructive than Islam on earth. Today about 80%-90% of the world's conflicts and terrorist attacks commited in the name of Islam, and not by chance. The terrorists are following the orders of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. Politicallyincorrectliberal 23:39, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Simple: Expose the real face of Islam to whomever you can, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, just like I exposed it to you. Islam cannot survive criticism, because it's too corrupted. How corrupted is it, you may ask? As corrupted as your mind will allow you to comprehend. Please read here if you want to understand better. Politicallyincorrectliberal 06:55, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was looking at your user Talk because of your edits to Instant-runoff voting etc., and I saw this old discussion. I was a moderator of the Usenet group soc.religion.islam for years (and technically, I still am, though I'm inactive there. Other fish). These charges have been coming up for many years, they were common before Bin Laden became well-known and the ensuing misery. The situation in Islam is complex. One clue, though, is that terrorism was uncommon and rejected in Islam until very recently. As an example of ancient "Islamic" terrorism, see Hashshashin, the root for "Assassin." The earliest political group that could be called terrorist were the Khawarij. They are prototypical of today's Salafis, particularly the Wahhabis, a group which wreaked mayhem in Arabia beginning in the 18th century, and which eventually was able to wrest control of what came to be called Saudi Arabia. This is a small minority in Islam. Any movement which attains that size, however, comes to have, in fact, a wide variety of opinion in it, and there are Wahhabis who are merely "fundamentalist" Muslims, but, unfortunately, there are also those who hate all traditional authority in Islam and are quite willing to murder in the name of their warped vision. The *actual* example of the Prophet was to make peace when there was not sufficient power to exert sovereignty without warfare, not to mention terrorism, which is, by definition, the action of those who claim weakness and oppression. The opinion of the vast majority of the knowledgeable in Islam is that such rebellion is forbidden, it is Fitna. Rather, in such situations, the Qur'an recommends -- one could say that a command is implied -- emigration, moving away from oppression, and, of course, the Muslim calendar is dated from just such an act by the Prophet. Complicating all this is the fact that Muslims mostly lived under repressive dictatorships for the last few hundred years, and the habits of keeping one's head down and not making waves are entrenched, so many Muslims don't speak up when faced with those who claim to be leaders of Islam, promoting obvious nonsense as the command of God. This is *our* problem as Muslims; but there is a new generation of Muslims, raised in relative freedom, who are not so shy, plus there are converts such as myself, some of whom have gone on to become serious scholars of Islam, such as Hamza Yusuf, whom I knew when he was a teenage convert. --Abd (talk) 13:51, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Approval Voting: Did you contribute this?

edit

I don't suppose you were responsible for adding this bit of text to the article on Approval Voting?

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Approval_voting&diff=prev&oldid=7115580
===Relation to effectiveness of choices===
Operations research has shown that the effectiveness of a policy and thereby a leader who sets several policies will be sigmoidally related to the level of approval associated with that policy or leader. There is an acceptance level below which effectiveness is very low and above which it is very high. More than one candidate may be in the effective region, or all candidates may be in the ineffective region. Approval voting attempts to ensure that the most-approved candidate is selected, maximizing the chance that the resulting policies will be effective.

This was contributed anonymously. Did you forget to sign in? You did the subsequent edit. I think this is a very important paragraph, but it wasn't cited, so I requested a citation on it, about a year ago, and now someone's deleted it for lack of a citation. Voting system visualizations

edit

Hi! And thanks for your interest in my visualization work. I would really love to see my visualizations (or any other application of my visualization technique, or even any other simulation-based analysis of voting methods) on Wikipedia. As the webpage at http://zesty.ca/voting/sim/ explains, i am frustrated with the heavy emphasis on black-and-white mathematical criteria in debates about voting methods. It motivates people to spend a lot of effort inventing contrived situations to break each other's favourite voting methods; what we really need, in my opinion, is insight into how voting methods behave in a broad sense (for instance, estimating the likelihood of pathological behaviour).

I have thought about posting my visualizations here before, but am worried that they would be considered Original Research, which Wikipedia doesn't allow. I was also afraid that posting this material in a Wikipedia article would be frowned upon as self-promotion. I'm unclear exactly what is allowed and forbidden, though, since webpages are used as references and sources quite frequently on Wikipedia. What are your thoughts on this? —Ka-Ping Yee (talk) 15:41, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Neko Zhang

edit

A tag has been placed on Neko Zhang requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. AfD nomination of Back to Mine: Adam Freeland

edit

I have nominated Back to Mine: Adam Freeland, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Back to Mine: Adam Freeland. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. AfD is not a vote

edit
  • I was reading AfD a moment ago and noticed you had commented at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of songs by American artists which reached number-one on the Eurochart Hot 100. However, it seems you did not provide a reason for your position to keep the article. AfD is not a vote (which is why it is now called Articles for Deletion instead of Votes for Deletion), and decisions regarding the fate of an article are made on the basis of the weight of the comments (in terms of deletion policy) and the general consensus the debate reached. Please see WP:NOTVOTE for more information on that topic. More to the point, you might want to have a look over WP:AADD, which outlines things that have no weight in a deletion debate. Thanks for your interest! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a note on my talkpage. --Falcon Darkstar Kirtaran (talk) 04:36, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • I thought I might also mention that it's not really appropriate to trawl the contributions list of an AfD submitter and find something which could be nominated, and then post it as a comment in order to discredit the nomination. It doesn't matter one whit who nominated it and what they've done in the past; everything should be judged on its own merit. Please remember to assume good faith. Thank you. --Falcon Darkstar Kirtaran (talk) 06:07, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Hmm. Someone also seems to have pointed out that you were canvassing, but left you no note here. You should probably not do that, to put it short, and it's still often called canvassing even if you don't ask anyone to vote a particular way. Telling people to come participate in debates is generally viewed very dimly, except in really exceptional circumstances, and this one was getting a fair bit of attention in any case. It's unfortunate that you were accused thusly by someone who didn't even bother (or have the courage, perhaps) to sign their comment, but nonetheless, this is usually what happens when you're found asking people to participate in discussions. Sorry to bug you so much, and I hope all this doesn't dissuade you from contributing; I just mean to point a few things out so you don't get yelled at for them later. --Falcon Darkstar Kirtaran (talk) 06:16, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks for your note. At the time I cross-posted the AfD to other articles to which it would certainly apply, there were only 2-3 people commenting; I felt it was very likely that the AfD would proceed without further commment from others. I'm not pretending to justify canvassing, but I pointed out to the AfD submitter another series which had the same issues and should be considered along with the articles which were eventually in the AfD. This point was made before the AfD was created, and yet Collectonian did not address the other series (DJ-Kicks). I believe this is mainly to be able to delete one series at a time, so as not to draw the attention of the editors of those other articles. My canvassing was to bring those other editors into the discussion since the precedent of deleting a notable DJ mix series would carry over to their articles in the future. Why not have the discussion once rather than many times, with increasing numbers of contributors each time? - McCart42 (talk) 16:11, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Rilo Kiley - Take-Offs And Landings.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Rilo Kiley - Take-Offs And Landings.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:19, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:The Delgados - Universal Audio.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Wikiproject Electronics collaboration

edit

Hi, I am writing to you because you have listed yourself as a member of the Electronics WikiProject. Sadly, this project is pretty dead, but I propose to resuscitate it with a collaboration. The idea is to have a concerted effort on improving one article per month, hopefully to GA or FA status and nominate the very best of them for the front page. I have prepared a page to control this process at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics/Collaboration (actually, I mostly shamelessly stole it from Wikipedia:WikiProject Mammals where a collaboration of this sort was succesfully run). There you can make nominations for articles for collaboration or comment on the nominations of others.

If you want to take part you might like to place this template {{WikiProject Electronics Collaboration}} on your userpage which will give you a link to the current collaboration. If you are no longer interested in Wikiproject Electronics, please remove yourself from the members list, which is now at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics/Members

Speedy deletion of Julie (EP)

edit

A tag has been placed on Julie (EP) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Message regarding your use of the No Multi License Template

edit

In case you are not aware, the Wikimedia Foundation has proposed that the copyright licensing terms on the wikis operated by the WMF – including Wikipedia – be changed to include the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) license in addition to the current GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) as allowed by version 1.3 of the GFDL. The community has approved this change with 75.8% in favor, and on June 15, 2009, the change will take effect.
You currently have {{NoMultiLicense}} on your user or user talk page, which states that your edits are licensed under the GFDL only. On or before June 15, this template will be changed to reflect Wikipedia's new licensing terms. If you accept the licensing change, you do not need to do anything (and feel free to remove this message); if you do not accept it, we regret that you will no longer be able to contribute to the encyclopedia. Please join the discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#NoMultiLicense template if you have any comments.

Proposed deletion of Balligomingo

edit

The article Balligomingo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

does not appear to meet WP:BAND.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. JohnCD (talk) 18:43, 13 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of SRC Computers

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on SRC Computers, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you.
