Quaker Flour Mill

edit

2012 photo of front 2-story section

Hi, I am plugging along on a worklist at Talk:List of RHPs in CO. I wonder if you might have any more photos for Quaker Flour Mill in Pueblo? It turns out the original 1869 portion of the building to the rear of front 2-story addition, is asserted to be the oldest building in Pueblo. It would be nice to have some view of any such 3-story part of the building, and there apparently was a 1927 one-story addition, too. Either way, thank you for contributing your photos. --Doncram (talk) 12:31, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Fire stations, including Silver Cliff one

edit

recent pic "Original Silver Cliff Firehouse & Town Hall"

Hi, i happen to be working on List of fire stations, including asking at wt:NRHP#Fire stations if other editors know of fire stations that are contributing buildings in historic districts, or otherwise escaped my searching of likely candidates out of NRIS database item names. I just came across this new pic of yours perhaps via a commons category, not sure. It doesn't seem to be NRHP-listed, but it looks clearly notable, including by sign mentioning a museum. Is the building a museum, or is it part of one? Could you perhaps dash off a one or two sentence article about the museum? Museums are obviously wikipedia-notable, I personally think (wp:ITSAMUSEUM). I'd like to include it more fully than I just have, at List of fire stations#Colorado. Also I'd appreciate if you know of any other fire station buildings included in historic districts or otherwise mentionable there. Cheers, --Doncram (talk) 02:03, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the delay. Museums are out of my area of expertise, so I'd like to pass on this at this time. Thanks and best wishes, Jeffrey Beall (talk) 01:45, 8 October 2018 (UTC).Reply

Quick question, maybe not a quick answer

edit

In general, would you advise against purchasing/subscribing content from predatory publishers, or is a blanket statement a bad idea (i.e. they should be evaluated like any other publisher)? If you can't answer, or you're uncomfortable answering, I definitely understand. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 20:38, 13 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

My working definition of predatory publishers only included those that were open access, so there's really nothing to purchase, as the content is freely available. However, the second part of your question hints at including metadata for predatory journals in library databases, and this is a big question. I think one of the roles of librarians is to curate content, so it's important to exclude junk journals from library databases, both open-access and subscription. If a library includes a predatory journal in, say, its online catalog, some may see this as the library giving its seal of approval to the journal. This is an opportunity for librarians to show their stuff and exclude corrupt journals from library databases. Jeffrey Beall (talk) 21:17, 13 November 2018 (UTC).Reply
As an non-librarian outsider, personally I think seeing who cites predatory journal is useful information, and enables research into predatory journals and also acts as an indicator of journal quality. If a journal cites OMICS dozens of times per year, it's likely not a very good journal and has a crap peer review process. Seeing who predatory journal themselves cite however, is completely useless. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 21:35, 13 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thank you for the reminder — I'd entirely forgotten that you only looked at OA publishers. Right now, I'm preparing to expand our DDA pool, and figuring that many journal publishers also publish ebooks, I'd decided to look through my list for publishers appearing on some of your lists. I'd found very few, which I attributed to these organizations only doing journals, but having run across a few (e.g. Wessex Institute of Technology Press), I was interested in your opinion. Definitely going to exclude them on cost grounds alone (why should we pay for anything that's OA? I've excluded better publishers for the same reason, e.g. ANU Press), and thank you for the point about seals of approval. I'd not previously considered that point, so I'll definitely remember it, especially when doing non-ebook work such as assisting faculty in my liaison area. And even with ebooks, part of my process for expanding the pool is evaluating DDA-participating publishers (if a publisher has issues, I don't want any of their content to be purchased without librarian input), so it always helps to have additional reasons for making the evaluation decisions. Nyttend (talk) 01:07, 14 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Excellent. It sounds like you're on the right track. Take care, Jeffrey Beall (talk) 12:05, 14 November 2018 (UTC).Reply

S. Platte River Bridge, by Denverjeffrey

Nice pic. Great you got there. You are much the better person for getting there and also contributing/uploading the pic. Argh, i was there in October i think it was, but didn't upload my pics. Your pic is probably better than any of mine, too. Hmm, what is more important is for me to upload multiple pics I got for Nachtrieb-Kelly Ranch, a bit further west on same trip, are you on your way to there too, I wonder? (The owner is very nice, by the way, and would probably be happy to have another visitor. It is harder to access, on private property. I had called ahead a week or two before and gotten permission to visit. I would be happy to share contact info by email.) Again, i bow to you, sir. :) --Doncram (talk) 04:07, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Morley Bridge pic by Jeffrey Beall in 2014
I still have yet to upload pics of the ranch, and also for nearby Maxwell Park School, and now it will be harder for me to find them. :( Am sort of trying to turn all of the Colorado counties from blue shades to red shades, at wp:NRHPPROGRESS, in terms of articles created; Routt County's list and Chaffee County's list will change over in the next update of maps there. Glad you've gotten to so many obscure places that it makes creating articles more enjoyable, informed.
Morley Bridge is near Alpine Pass (currently a redlink, for which I think a geographic place article is justified, draft at Draft:Alpine Pass)... do you happen to know if the pass and the former railroad tunnel underneath it span the Continental Divide or did the railroad pass that at a different point? I see the Alpine Pass ghost town south of the "Alpine Pass western portal" of tunnel labelled in Google maps, and there is a "Continental Divide Trail" zig-zgging around but I don't know where the "eastern portal" would be (perhaps some point near about 38°39′00″N 106°24′20″W / 38.650080°N 106.405569°W / 38.650080; -106.405569?, where there is a car symbol denoting "family outing" point in the Delorme Atlas of Colorado Topographic Maps) or where the actual top of an Alpine Pass is located. I don't know if my non-4wd little car can get me near there, this summer. Maybe you have better maps or knowledge of that exact area? Any help in the related articles would be appreciated. Either way, again, thanks for your pics. --Doncram (talk) 18:31, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
The article for the Alpine Tunnel says the tunnel (and therefore the pass) crosses the continental divide. There's a GNIS entry for the tunnel, and it gives 38.6477734 -106.4066926 as, apparently, the eastern (i.e. the Chaffee County side) portal. See also the excellent article for Hancock Pass, which is nearby. Also, have a look at this book in Google Books. Best wishes, Jeffrey Beall (talk) 15:48, 9 April 2021 (UTC).Reply

Wikipedia document request service, and The Wikipedia Library, etc.

edit

Hi, the Wikipedia document request service that I mentioned is at the "Resource Request" section of WikiProject Resource Exchange. There is a "Click here to make a new request" button, at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request. It's served by volunteers. FYI, my request for Kupfer article on "Oil Spring", and back and forth ended up taking about a month, given a mistake about pages, but I'm just really glad to have gotten it.

I've also recently started using The Wikipedia Library to do my own searching for old local newspaper articles, and more. U can see literature services provided at The Wikipedia Library: Browse partners; it includes Ebsco (or Ebscohost?, which seems to be what's searched if you just enter a search without selecting a specific resource), ScienceDirect, Jstor, and "Newspaper Archive" (a service comparable to Newspapers.com). This is free to you with no sign-up, no special permissions required, just enter via this Wikipedia Library entry point, which gives u a token or something... maybe there's a limit how many people can be using it?. In the past this might have required getting special permission, I think.

Further there's at least one resource available that does require permission/approval, which I saw mentioned in this diff at User:Cbl62's Talk page. That is to get access to Newspapers.com, which I haven't done yet: go to "Apply here", maybe after already setting up some account.

Hope this helps. Writing this helps me, too, i am gonna copy it and edit it for wp:NRHPHELP.

Hmm, I know that the Denver library offers a lot, that in the past they provided Newspapers.com or similar access. I'd like to know its offerings for my own referencing and for wp:NRHPHELP too.... --Doncram (talk) 02:29, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to participate in a research

edit

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
