I am thinking about adding a page tied to Sawmill dedicated to sawmill equipment; canters, edgers, resaws, etc. 02:03, 22 February 2007 (UTC)MDSNYDER

greenchain / planerchain

edit

I don't know how to reliably edit wikipedia articles, so I try to add useful comments on the talk page in hope that someone else will consider my suggestions: Some industrial-scale sawmills of the mid and late 20th century had various labor intensive tasks which did not require high skills. The "greenchain" and "planerchain" crews performed such work. After the rough cut lumber comes out of the sawmill it was often hand-sorted using a "greenchain" platform whereby the lumber is moved along laterally until it reaches the worker who piles the lumber of those dimensions. Stacks of rough cut lumber are often sun-dried or kiln-dried and then sent to the planer for final finishing. The finished lumber is often sorted as it moves along on a "planerchain" platform. The lumber is lighter and easier to handle on the planerchain than on the greenchain. Sorry, no citations other than my own experience. Been there, done that. More photographs would be good for this article. This article could be expanded. LFlagg (talk) 03:15, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Why does the text always run off the window whenever I post something on Wikipedia??? ?!? LFlagg (talk) 03:20, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

In the above case (which I have corrected) the problem was cause by having spaces preceding typed text. You might see if avoiding spaces at the beginning of a paragraph prevents the problem.Thewellman (talk) 16:17, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Modern Sawmilling

edit

Disappointed to see that this Wikipedia page protrays sawmills as being old fashioned and out of date. We are not all hill billies!!! I own a sawmill and it does not look anything like the photographs on wikipedia, apart from the pictures at the bottom of the page. If we want to encourage young ambitious people to join the sawmilling industry we have to demostrate that the industry has moved forward. There is now a huge amount of technology applied in sawmilling and we have moved away from the manual and unsafe practices of the past. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.130.132.158 (talk) 09:42, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
