Lemma: Genocide vs. Ethnic Cleansing
editThe Bosnian genocide (Bosnian: bosanski genocid) refers to either the Srebrenica massacre or the wider crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing campaign throughout areas controlled by the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) during the Bosnian War of 1992–1995. The events in Srebrenica in 1995 included the killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys, as well as the mass expulsion of another 25,000–30,000 Bosniak civilians by VRS units under the command of General Ratko Mladić. says the introduction.
While the Srebrenica massacre clearly was part of the ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian war, I want to cast some doubts on naming it "genocide". 8000 persons killed is a lot, but in the end the ethnical group of Bosniaks is much larger, even compared to the number of 25-30 k expulsed people. The definition from the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide points out that there needs to be a mental element (intention to destroy), which we can assume was there. But recently, I learned about a serial stabber, who targeted Palestinians. Was this a genocide? Surely not, but an ethnically motivated crime.
This means that the target of destruction must be the group, as such, and not its members as individuals. Genocide can also be committed against only a part of the group, as long as that part is identifiable (including within a geographically limited area) and “substantial.” [1]
What is a substantial part of the ethnical group? According to Wikipedia, there are ~3 M Bosniaks of which 1,77 M live in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Gunnar (talk) 16:28, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
Lowest estimate for number of victims of Bosnian genocide should be changed tom “8,000” to “31,107” Because considering Srebrenica alone to be a genocide is wrong when other towns (Višegrad, Foča, Prijedor, Zvornik, Vlasenica, Bijeljina etc) shared a similar fate. With this in mind the date of the genocide should also be adjusted to “1992-1995”
Additionaly it can be written that the highest estimate for number of victims of Bosnian genocide is 156,000 as the source below states. Either way the figure of 8k is used to refer to a single massacre not genocide as a whole.

Motive Box
editWhy do you write in the Motive Box that it was anti Turkic and Croatian sentiment? Turks and Croats have nothing to do with the genocide those people who were massacred where Bosniaks not Turks and Croats.87.116.132.30 (talk) 17:00, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
- That has 2 sources cited against it. One is from the Guardian which says "Ratko Mladic, Karadzic's military chief and fellow genocide suspect, described the conquest of Srebrenica as an opportunity for 'the Serbs to avenge themselves on the Turks'". The other is an article titled "How the Bosnian Serb Assembly Redefined Bosniaks as Enemy ‘Turks’". I didn't put it there but I'm guessing that's the answer to your question in regard to Turks. As far as Croats are concerned, as the article makes clear there was genocide against Croats in Bosnia too. DeCausa (talk) 17:28, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

Better Source Link
editI found this source(https://markdanner.com/1997/12/04/america-and-the-bosnia-genocide/) which is a non-paywalled version of a source already in the references, if someone with an older account than mine could replace the source with this, it would make the page much more accessible for those who want to research more. ~zeppelin_spindrift (talk) 10:57, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
