He was elected MP for Calne in 1659 for the Third Protectorate Parliament[3] and in 1660 for the Convention Parliament.[3]
After the Restoration, Bayntun was appointed Knight of the Order of the Bath in 1661 and had a command in the Scots army. He was High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1664.[2] In 1675 he was elected MP for Devizes again and sat until his death in 1679.[3]
