A GREAT EXPERIENCE
4 out of 5 stars
A GREAT EXPERIENCE
From the team that brought you Syphon Filter, Uncharted and Resistance on the Vita, this game is astonishing. This game sets out to achieve a lot with an open world environment, the undead freakers, undead hordes, undead children, undead animals, pagans, human enemies and a hostile world that is out to kill you.The graphics are amazing, especially with HDR. I really love the details and intricacies that have gone into the game design to tell the story. The audio is Dolby Digital 7.1 with great surround sound effects and an eerie atmosphere. The motorcycle sounds are awesome too.Despite negative reviews, I say go out and try the game. I feel that in case the reviews are wrong. This world is so beautifully crafted and huge. There’s so much to explore, so much to interact with. I’ve fallen in love with the land, just like I did with Skyrim and Zelda: BOTW.Yes Days Gone has got bugs, but the developers are patching it regularly and none of the flaws are game breaking. The most fun aspect is riding around on your motorcycle and upgrading it - this is a love letter to the motorcycle community. I am a rider myself. The authenticity is certainly there. The most stand out thing is the melee combat, it’s totally brutal and feels like Batman Arkham Asylum. The way you can fight multiple enemies is breathtaking and makes you feel like a badass. You slice throats, legs, stab enemies in the head or blow them to pieces with a shotgun. The Bourne Identity comes to mind.I’d say this game is best described as a combination of a multitude of AAA games - Uncharted, The Last Of Us, Assassins Creed, Batman, GTA and more. This is no bad thing, instead it’s a great cocktail of gaming heaven.I really underestimated this game because of the reviews, but then Digital Foundry’s breakdowns really sold me to keep it. I don’t regret a thing. This game is just so playable. I like the story too, I don’t have a problem with it and it’s funny at times.I would give it 5-stars, but it still needs a few patches, however I can see it exceeding a 5-star rating once it grows. The developers put their whole heart into it and aren’t giving up. There gonna polish it like No Man’s Sky in the future.I’ve seen a lot worse games get released with bugs, yet get top reviews. This game is so good that I want to play it now...So see ya! I’m gone.

The game has a great concept and looks good but it feels as though it wasn't quite finished, thus there are numerous amounts of bugs and glitches. The mechanics are fairly well done but if I were to compare it to the likes of RDR2 then Red Dead would be the champion all day long. I feel that multiple updates will make the game better and feel more finished come time. I still play it and the more you play the better it gets so would recommend, but maybe buy it a few months from now so you get a better experience! Edit: Originally bought the game, played it a couple of times then put it on the shelf for a few months. Now, after playing many hour and after a HUGE patch, the game is in my eyes, really spot on! It grew and grew on me the more I played it and I've gone from not being too fond of it to loving it. It's definitely worth buying as it's a very unique game. The graphics aren't the greatest and NPC's speech is ever so slightly out of sinc sometimes but it has a vast open world that gets bigger and bigger as you play through the story so graphics are inevitable going to take a hit due to the sheer size of the game. Overall I would advise buying and playing through the game if you like open-world, non linear, RPG games!

There are several things I love about this game, but there are several things I really don't like which is a shame because it had the potential to be an amazing game! Cruising around on a motorbike that's fully customisable, fighting infected, wildlife and trying to survive. Now that's fun. Clearing out enemy bases, fighting crazed Rippers, running into a swarm or hunting deer with infected wolves on your tail, yep that's fun too.

Bases or caves you've cleared of infected will eventually have something else to fight in them. There are friendly camps about that you can do missions for and trade things with them for guns, ammo or bike parts. You can rescue survivors on the road and send them to these camps to work. A slight bug is when you've rescued a survivor, they will always appear in trouble in the exact same spot, but you can only rescue them once. They appear in a fighting stance against the bad guys you have to save them from afterwards.

There are plenty of story missions to do, some are very dull. You drive 2.4km to your destination, long loading screen, 30 second cut scene that added nothing to the story then you get a congratulations and 1000xp. Driving all the way back to your wife's grave constantly is rather annoying. They repeat this in another area with climbing a radio tower to talk your friend constantly.

The beginning of the game feels fresh and new, but after halfway through the story, I just felt like I was repeating myself all the time. I rushed through the last through story missions because they were so boring and repetitive. Exactly the same mission, just in a new area.

And last but not least as it's the main annoyance of this game. The voice actor for your main character Deacon St. John is played by Sam Witwer and he's terrible. He's got to be one of the worst voice actors I've ever had to listen to. Cut scenes aren't believable and very dull. There's a long loading screen between each 30 second segment which breaks it up too much and doesn't make you feel involved. I can't relate to the main character. He's dull, boring and not believable. I don't feel involved in it because the acting is so terrible. When you're driving around he'll repeat the same phrases over and over again. He yells while other people you're talking to are whispering. He's just really annoying to listen to and his performance is laughable at best. Also we're supposed to believe he used to be in the army, but he doesn't know how a two way radio works...

It's definitely worth playing if you love real world survival games like this. The motorbike is cool. The story isn't great but there's plenty of open world to explore. The other characters are more believable than Deacon which helps to create the world you're in, but I still really don't like the character you're forced to be and that really ruined my experience with this game.

I recommend playing it at least once if you like these kinds of games. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be. I've now passed it onto my brother who got bored after the first section, so it really wasn't worth £34.

Finally took the plunge and bought this in January after keeping an eye on the much improved post-update reviews - and lower price of course! It took a lot of stick on release for being buggy but after completing it to platinum I only uncovered a few minor ones; people stuck in and out of cars or the last bandit in a camp facing the wrong way after carnage had ensued around him for example. Certainly nothing to get stressed about put it that way.

I was a massive fan of the under-rated Mad Max game and I see this as its kind of spiritual successor. It certainly shares a lot with that game - lots of rampaging across the wasteland, (the beautiful imagined Oregon), camps to clear, excellent gunplay and some brutal melee. The main difference being in this one that you’re on a very cool and upgradeable motorcycle. It starts off as a weedy chugalong but finishes as a knobbly tired behemoth that you could cross continents on in a straight line only stopping for fuel and coffee. It really gains in size and stature (and jazzy livery) and off-roading capabilities though a rampaging bear or wolf could still knock you off if you’re not paying attention. Time to fix it up and once again enjoy the marvelous scenery and fabulous changing weather of the North West US.

Other game influences/similarities are clearly The Last of Us and third party shooters like the Uncharted games though this lacks the latter’s puzzles and humour. A new IP being mentioned in the same breath as Naughty Dog’s finest offerings is high praise but it does hold it’s own against them IMO and that’s even before you get to the game's USP, the hordes. Oh man, these are scary but when you're ready to take them on make for an excellent and adrenaline filled challenge though you'll need to be tooled up with the right weapons and “throwables” (grenades and Molotovs etc) to beat them. The only downside is the rather cumbersome item selection wheel which is an acquired taste but not a game-breaker once you are used to it.

The story telling is very good with well-formed characters though your lead Deacon himself, can be a bit of a dcik and has a strange moral compass - getting all antsy about murderers and rapists before proceeding to slaughter them all himself. He also sounds a bit “Mayor West” when coming across infestations etc but it does have a well formed plot and I particularly liked the eerie twist at the end of the Nero story line so look out for that. Although quite repetitive at the start once you settle into your drifter lifestyle it does get quite addictive but it's no GTA as far as extra-curricular activities are concerned.

I would though call it a “fair” game with all the hordes being optional so don't not buy this game because of them, you can actually skip those required to complete the story. The platinum trophy is definitely attainable (on easy if you like) if you are prepared to put the hours in. The one trophy that gave me the most trouble was a five second nitrous powered drift! If you really don’t want to do battle with the hordes, and the ones in the Southern part are definitely more of a challenge, you can reset the camps and/or infestation zones on completion of the story to farm XP and get the last skill points for your final trophy.

This is the first game in a long while that I’ve really looked forward to picking up when getting home and would highly recommend it for relieving those lockdown blues.
