In 1977, 10 years after the last meeting, Gisela Reich and Barbara Bronnen asked former members of Gruppe 47 about their self-image: among others the founder and organizer Hans Werner Richter, Joachim Kaiser, Siegfried Unseld and the later Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass. As a spectator, you get an idea of how things used to be at these meetings: vanity met modesty, exuberant self-confidence met great anxiety, and critics and the criticized did not always treat each other kindly.
