In his day he was world class, but his wife was terrified that he'd go to Europe to race and die pushing his guts out to win. They had a young family and Ernie chose them over the possibility of becoming a world champion. He continued to race on home soil and beat many of the Kiwis who came home with world titles in Moto-x and road racing.
